(WASHINGTON, PA.): Clarion topped California 10-2 in the second game, after dropping a tough 3-2 decision in game one, giving the Golden Eagles a split on Saturday in a key PSAC-West doubleheader at Consol Energy Park.
The split raises Clarion's record to 4-13 overall and 1-3 in the PSAC-West, while California is in first place in the West with a 6-2 mark, coupled with a 17-6 overall record.
Eric Kempton pitched 5 strong innings to get the win in game two, yielding only two runs, one earned, on two hits while striking out 3. Gregg Bandzuh pitched two scoreless innings to close the deal.
Clarion scored three in the first inning to take a 3-0 lead. Adam Foltz scored following a Matt Rossi single, Rossi scored on a bases loaded walk to Kirk Hays, and Matt White scored on an infield single by Sean Zimmerman.
Clarion broke the game open in the third when Mark White tripled with the bases loaded to plate three runs, then White came home on Adam Foltz sac fly.
The Eagles added three more in the seventh when Matt Rossi doubled home Foltz and Andrew Petruska, then with one out, Jason Krimsky singled home Rossi for Clarion's 10-2 win.
Krimsky was 3 for 3 in the game, Petruska, Rossi and Hays had two hits each.
The Eagles lost a touch 3-2 decision in game one, as Chuck Roller took the loss in spite of a very strong performance. Roller pitched a complete game (6 innings), gave up 3 runs, 3 earned, struck out 5, walked 4 and gave up only 6 hits.
Cal led 1-0 into the third when Clarion took a 2-1 lead on Matt Rossi's two run double.
In the bottom of the third Cal's Sam DiMatteo homered to tie the game 2-2.
Cal got the game winner in the fifth, and again it was DiMatteo ringing a double to right center field to score the Vulcans third run.
Clarion will host Point Park in a doubleheader on Monday at Memorial Field starting at 1pm.
