(ERIE, PA.): Clarion's Baseball team defeated Gannon 5-3 in game 2 of their doubleheader on Saturday, earning a split against the Golden Knights at University Field. Gannon won Game 1 by a 7-5 score.
Clarion raised its overall record to 8-15 and now has a PSAC-West mark of 3-5. Gannon dropped to 4-21 overall and 2-10 in the PSAC-Western Division.
Clarion jumped ahead 5-0 in the top of the third inning with 5 earned runs. Sean Zimmerman started the inning with a single, and Scott Berkes doubled to right to put runners at second and third. Mark White doubled to left field for two rbi's, and after Adam Foltz was hit by a pitch, a double steal put runners at second and third again. Andrew Petruska hit a sac fly to score White, and then Foltz scored on a Jason Krimsky ground out to make it 4-0. Matt White doubled and Matt Rossi tripled to complete the scoring, giving Clarion a 5-0 lead.
Gannon scored three unearned runs in the fifth to cut the lead to 5-3, but the Eagles held on for the victory.
John Hynes pitched five innings, gave up three runs, all unearned, struck out one and walked three. Brandon Slater came on in the sixth and tossed two scoreless innings to pick up the save.
In the opener, Clarion fell behind early and lost 7-5.
Gannon scored four runs in the bottom of the first off starter and loser Chuck Roller to take a 4-0 lead.
Clarion rallied for two runs in the second. Erik Kempton and Scott Berkes singled, moved to second and third with one out, and both scored on a single by Adam Foltz.
Gannon picked up a run in the second and two in the fourth to lead 7-2, before Clarion scored a run in the fifth and two in the seventh. Matt White doubled home Rossi in the seventh, then Krimsky doubled to right to score Rossi to make it 7-5, but the Eagles could get no closer.
Roller pitched 6 innings, gave up 7 runs, 5 earned, struck out 2 and walked 4. Foltz, Matt White and Krimsky all had two hits each.
Clarion hosts Penn State - Beaver at 1pm on Monday.
