(LOCK HAVEN, PA.): Clarion's Baseball team dropped a key PSAC-West
doubleheader on Monday at Lock Haven by scores of 2-1 and 7-3 at Foundation Field.
Clarion's record drops to 11-22 overall and 6-10 in the PSAC-West, while Lock Haven sits at 14-26 overall and 8-8 in the PSAC-West.
Clarion senior pitcher John Hynes tossed a gem in game one, holding Lock Haven to only 4 hits and 2 runs in six innings. Hynes walked only 3 and struck out 1 in the game.
The Golden Eagles took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third when freshman Scott Berkes doubled, went to third on a ground out, and scored on one of Lock Haven's 5 errors in the game.
The Bald Eagles tied the game with a run in the third, and then took the lead for good with a single run in the bottom of the sixth.
Clarion had two on and two out in the seventh when Andrew Petruska flied out to center to end the game.
Clarion scored first again in game two, getting a single run in the top of the second. The Eagles had a golden opportunity to have a big inning when Jason Krimsky, Kirk Hays and Tom Briley all walked to open the inning. Mark White hit a sacrifice fly to center to score a run, but the rally stalled there.
Lock Haven countered with six runs in the bottom of the second, five of which came off starter loser Erik Kempton. Gregg Bandzuh came on in relief to pitched 4.1 innings giving up two runs, and Brandon Slater pitched two-thirds of an inning.
Clarion got two runs in the of the seventh to pull within 7-3, but could get no closer.
Matt White was 2 for 4 to lead the way.
Clarion hosts Lake Erie for a doubleheader on Tuesday starting at 1pm.
