CLARION - A late rally in Game One and a strong pitching performance in Game Two weren't enough for the Clarion University baseball team, as the Golden Eagles dropped both ends of doubleheader to visiting Lake Erie Tuesday afternoon.
Clarion lost Game One 3-2 when it stranded runners on second and third after cutting a 3-1 deficit to 3-2. Then in Game Two, Eric Panko struck out 10 but took the loss after three of the four runs he allowed in five innings were unearned.
In Game One, Clarion was down 3-1 going to the bottom of the seventh when Mark White led off with a single, moved to second on an error and scored on a single by Matt White that put runners on second and third. But the Golden Eagles weren't able to push the tying run across.
Clarion's first run in the game came when Jason Krimsky scored on a Chuck Roller single.
Scott Berkes took the loss pitching 5 2/3 innings giving up three runs, two earned, while striking out four and walking two.
In Game Two, Lake Erie took a 2-0 lead in the top of the fourth before Clarion tied the game in the bottom of the inning when Mark White singled home Roller, who had reached on an error, and Kirk Hays singled and scored on a wild pitch. Lake Erie, though, retook the lead with two in the fifth and then tacked on two insurance runs in the seventh.
With the losses, Clarion drops to 11-24 on the season. The Golden Eagles return to action Friday when they host Mercyhurst in a PSAC-West doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
