CLARION — A late rally in Game Two wasn’t enough for the Clarion University baseball team, as they dropped a pair of PSAC-West games to visiting Mercyhurst Friday afternoon.
The Golden Eagles dropped Game One 10-2 and Game Two 8-5.
In Game Two, Clarion (11-26 overall, 6-12 PSAC-West) trailed 8-2 heading to the bottom of the seventh but rallied with three runs to get the game close before coming up short.
Scott Berkes started the rally with a walk and Sean Zimmerman was hit by a pitch. Mark White then doubled in Berkes, Adam Foltz grounded out scoring Zimmerman and White scored on a wild pitch.
Clarion also scored solo runs in the third and the sixth scoring in the third when Andrew Petruska singled home Zimmerman and in the sixth when Matt Rossi scored on an error.
Mercyhurst got two in the first, three in the fourth, one in the fifth and two in the seventh.
Chuck Roller took the loss going six innings giving up six runs, on
12 hits and one walk while striking out five.
In Game One Mercyhurst hit three home runs while scoring nine runs off starter John Hynes. Hynes went 5 2/3 innings striking out three and walking three.
Rossi and Berkes each had three hits for Clarion in the loss. Rossi also had an RBI and a run scored.
Clarion returns to action at Mercyhurst Saturday in a PSAC-West matchup.
