EASTLAKE, Ohio - Scott Berkes put in two solid relief outings and Erik Kempton hit his second home run of the season, but Lake Erie College swept a doubleheader from visiting Clarion in non-conference baseball action Thursday at Classic Park in Eastlake, Ohio.
Lake Erie used a seven-run second inning and a five-run fourth inning to take Game One 12-2 before building a 5-1 lead in after three innings in Game Two on its way to a 6-3 victory.
Despite the losses, Clarion had plenty of highlights including solid relief work from Berkes, who pitched pitched a total of four innings of relief in the doubleheader allowing just one run on three hits while striking out six. Kempton, meanwhile, hit a two-run home run in the fourth inning of Game Two to get Clarion within two runs.
The Golden Eagles (8-17) also had four players have multiple-hit games over the two games. Matt Rossi was 2-for-3 in Game One, while Adam Foltz was 2-for-3 in Game Two and Jason Krimsky and Matt White were each 2-for-4 in Game Two.
Kevin Keebler started Game One had ran into some tough luck allowing 10 runs, only three of them earned, on eight hits and three walks while striking out two. T.J. Anderson then went 1 2/3 innings allowing three hits, two runs and a walk while striking out two. Berkes finished off going one scoreless inning striking out two.
In Game Two, Ron Cannon started going three innings and allowing five runs on four hits and two walks while striking out three. Berkes then came in and went three innings allowing one run on three hits while striking out four.
Clarion, which was originally scheduled to play host to IUP Friday, will now host the Crimson Hawks at 1 p.m. Sunday in a doubleheader. The Golden Eagles will travel to IUP for a 1 p.m. doubleheader Saturday.
