SLIPPERY ROCK – Visiting Clarion was swept in a PSAC-West doubleheader at Slippery Rock’s Critchfield Park Friday afternoon. The Golden Eagles lost Game One 8-3 and Game Two 15-6.

In Game One, Slippery Rock (33-13, 14-8 PSAC-West) scored three runs in each of the first two innings to take a 6-2 lead after two and then tacked on solo runs in the fifth and sixth. Clarion (12-31, 6-16) got two in the second and one in the seventh.

Scott Berkes took the loss for Clarion going 1 1/3 innings and allowing four runs, all earned, on six hits. Eric Panko relieved and finished off the final 4 2/3 innings allowing four runs, three earned, on seven hits and two walks while striking out one. Matt White paced Clarion’s offense going 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI. He was also hit by a pitch. Erik Kempton added a single and two RBIs, while Adam Foltz and Jason Krimsky each had doubles. Kirk Hays and Andrew Petruska scored runs for the Golden Eagles.

In the nightcap, Clarion jumped all over Slippery Rock starter Mark Tanner scoring five times in the first two innings including four times in the second. But Slippery Rock closed to within 6-5 at the end of four innings and then exploded for five runs in the fifth and five more in the sixth off three Golden Eagle relievers to get the 15-6 victory.

Panko took the loss in relief of Gregg Bandzuh going 1 2/3 innings and allowing five runs, all earned, on four hits and walk while striking out one. Bandzuh went the first 3 1/3 innings allowing five runs, all earned, on six hits and two walks while striking out one. Ray Pollum threw a 1/3 of an inning allowing four runs, all earned, on four hits, while Matt Rossi went the final 2/3 of an inning allowing one earned run on one hit and a walk.

Rossi was the leader on offense going 2-for-4 with three RBIs, while Matt White hit his third home run of the year and was 1-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI. Mark White was 1-for-3 with a run scored and two RBIs, while Foltz doubled and scored two runs. Sean Zimmerman chipped in going 2-for-2 with a run scored.

Clarion closes out its season at Noon Saturday when it hosts Slippery Rock in doubleheader.
