CLARION GRIDDERS TOPPLE FSC 33-21

(Fairmont, W.V.): Clarion sophomore cornerback Chris Wilson returned an interception 40-yards with 3:43 remaining to lead the Golden Eagles to a 33-21 win over Fairmont State on Thursday night at FSC's Rosier-Duvall Field.

The opener for both teams, Clarion moves to 1-0 and Fairmont drops to 0-1 on the 2009 season.

Ahead 16-14 at halftime, Clarion jumped to a 26-14 third quarter lead scoring ten unanswered points.

Clarion linebacker Arminas Maciulis intercepted a Derek Taylor pass to set up the Golden Eagles at the FSC 46-yard line. QB Tyler Huether tossed a 10-yard pass to Craig Bunney to the FSC 1, then Huether scored on a 1-yard run to give the Eagles a 23-14 lead with 6:48 to go in the third quarter.

Eagle linebacker Joe Fox recovered an FSC fumble at the Falcon 38, setting up the offense in scoring position. The drive moved down to the FSC 5, but when the Eagles stalled at the 5, placekicker Robert Mamula's fourth field goal of the game a 22-yarder, gave Clarion a 26-14 lead with 4:52 left in the third.

Backup FSC qb Vick Bradford scored on a 13-yard run with 11:18 left in the game to bring the Falcons back to within 26-21, setting up Wilson game-winning interception.

Clarion led at halftime 16-14, when Robert Mamula booted a personal best 46-yard field goal with 1-second remaining before intermission.

The Golden Eagles drove downfield 42-yards in only 5 plays to take the lead. Tyler Huether completed two passes for 30-yards to set up the go-ahead score.

Mamula opened the scoring with a 21 yard field goal giving Clarion a 3-0 lead at 13:00 of the first quarter. Huether completed a 54-yard pass to Craig Bunney on the game's first play to put Clarion first and goal, but the drive stalled and Mamula kicked the field goal.

Fairmont went ahead 7-3 when wideout Perry Baker took a handoff and raced 54-yards down the right sideline for the score at 11:54 of the first.

Mamula booted a 30-yard field goal at 1:30 of the first quarter to bring Clarion to within 7-6. The Eagles drove 67-yards in 14-plays.

Clarion took the lead back when freshman cornerback Daily Whitten picked off a Derek Taylor pass on the right sideline, then raced down the sideline with a 57-yard interception return for a touchdown. Mamula's PAT gave Clarion a 13-7 lead at 9:59 of the second.

FSC came back to take a 14-13 lead when Omoniyi Bakare raced 35-yards for a touchdown with 5:55 left in the second, setting up Mamula's field goal before halftime.

Clarion totaled 346 yards of total offense getting 93 rushing and 253 passing. Huether completed 20 of 41 passes for 253 yards.

Jacques Robinson caught 7 passes for 85 yards, while Matt Foradora grabbed 7 for 76 yards.

Mamula was 4 for 4 in field goals, and connected on all three PAT's giving him 15 points on the night.

Fairmont had 371 yards getting 238 rushing and 133 passing. Taylor completed 8 of 17 for 85 yards. Doug Brazill rushed for 56 and Scott Victorio had 53.

Clarion's defense came up with big plays all night long. Two interception returns for td's, and a fumble recovery. Nick Sipes had 13 tackles and 1 tfl, while Ben Maund made9 stops with 3 tfl's.

Clarion hosts Kutztown on September 5th at 6pm, and FSC travels to Lake Erie College.
