Final Stats
(CLARION, PA.): Kutztown’s Dontay Wilson rushed for 90 yards and 1 td and kicker Matt Dineen booted three field goals to lead the visiting Golden Bears to a 25-6 win over Clarion on Saturday night at in front of 4,500 fans at Memorial Stadium.
Kutztown raised its overall record to 2-0 on the season, while Clarion dropped to 1-1.
Clarion qb Tyler Huether (Sr. Irwin/Penn Trafford) completed 27 of 47 passes for 242 yards and 1 td, while junior receiver Jacques Robinson (Pgh. – Oliver) caught 10 passes for 84 yards, but it wasn’t enough for the Golden Eagles on Saturday night, who missed several opportunities to score.
On its second possession, Clarion drove from its own 42 to the Kutztown 13. The drive stalled and the Golden Eagles called on Craig Bunney ((Jr. Freedom/Ambridge), substituting for the injured Robert Mamaula, to try a 30-yard field goal, but the kick just missed to the right and the game continued 0-0.
Kutztown got on the board driving 70 yards in 8 plays to find paydirt. Dontay Wilson scored on a 14-yard td run with 12:35 left before halftime and took a 7-0 lead.
In the second quarter Clarion drove from its own 28 to the Kutztown 34, but the Golden Eagles came up empty when a fourth and 7 failed from the Bear 34.
The turning point likely came late in the second quarter when the Golden Eagles had their best scoring opportunity of the half. After a short punt gave Clarion the ball at its own 46, Clarion drove to the KU 3 utilizing the no-huddle offense. Huether hit four straight passes including an 11-yarder to Craig Bunney and three passes to Robinson for 7, 13 and 6, placing Clarion on the 3 yard line. An incomplete pass, John Fuhrer’s (Fr. Pgh – Keystone Oaks) rush for no gain, and another incomplete pass brought fourth and goal. Head coach Jay Foster went for the touchdown on fourth down, but Huether’s pass in the endzone was tipped and just out of the reach of Robinson with 20-seconds left before intermission. Kutztown led 7-0 at halftime.
Kutztown drove 76-yards in 11 plays but their drive stalled at the Clarion 4. Matt Dineen came on and booted a 21-yard field goal and Kutztown took a 10-0 lead.
Clarion went back to the no-huddle offense on its next possession and drove 68-yards in only 6 plays to score. From its own 32 Huether hit Jacques Robinson for completions of 14 and 11 yards to the KU 43. An 11-yard catch by Matt Ward (So. Murrysville/Franklin Regional), and a 5-yard catch from Robinson had Clarion at the Bear 27. A 19-yard pass to Craig Bunney set up an 8-yard td pass from Huether to Matt Foradora (Sr. Falls Creek/Brockway) to bring Clarion to within 10-6. Nick Sipes came on for the PAT, but the attempt was blocked and KU’s Jay McKnight returned the pigskin for a rare two-point defensive score raising the Bear lead to 12-6.
KU’s Dineen opened the fourth quarter with a 24-yard field goal to give Kutztown a 15-6 lead, then added a 44-yarder with 9:08 remaining for an 18-6 Kutztown lead.
Kutztown’s Shane Martin added a 1-yard td run with 1:41 left to make the final Kutztown 25 Clarion 6.
Clarion won the stat battle in total offense (329-306) and first downs (20-15). Huether’s 27 completions and 47 attempts were personal highs in a single game. Robinson had 10 catches for 84 yards, while Craig Bunney grabbed 5 for 62, Matt Foradora clutched 5 for 43 and 1 td, and Matt Ward had 5 receptions for 43 yards.
Freshman running back John Fuhrer rushed 16 times for 47 yards.
Defensively Nick Sipes Jr. Curwensville) had 9 tackles, 2 tfl’s and 1 sack, while Arminas Maciulis (Jr. Jefferson Hills/Thomas Jefferson) notched 8 stops, and Barrington Morrison (So. Pgh – Penn Hills) had 7 tackles, 1 sack and 1 fumble caused.
KU quarterback Shane Martin completed 11 of 20 passes for 140 yards, including 3 to Jake Cahill for 81 yards.
Dontay Wilson rushed 19 times for 90 yards and 1 td.
Clarion travels to East Stroudsburg next Saturday for a 7pm game.
