PESKY EAGLES FALL TO NO. 12 IUP

INDIANA - A pesky Clarion University men's basketball team fell short in its upset bid at No. 12 IUP falling 76-60 in the PSAC-West opener for both teams Wednesday night at IUP's Memorial Field House.

The Golden Eagles (7-6 overall, 0-1 PSAC-West) trailed by just three, 33-30, at halftime, and were within four, 49-45, with 10:38 left following two Lloyd Harrison free throws before IUP went on an 11-3 run to start to pull away.

Clarion trailed by 10, 14-4, early before taking a 27-25 lead on a Mike Sherry 3-pointer with 2:32 left in the half before IUP retook the lead at 33-30 at halftime.

Paul McQueen led Clarion with 17 points and nine rebounds on 8 of 14 shooting, while Lloyd Harrison added 15 points, five rebounds and five assists. Sherry added nine points on three 3-pointers.

Thomas Young led IUP with 26 points, Darryl Webb added 14 points and 11 rebounds, Akida McLain had 13 points and 11 rebounds and Ashton Smith had 11.

Clarion returns to action at 3 p.m. Saturday when it hosts Gannon in its PSAC-West home opener. The game can be heard on WCUC, 91.7 FM in Clarion and on the internet at www.redzonemedia.com.

IUP is back in action at 3 p.m. Saturday at Mercyhurst.

NOTES - It was the ninth double-digit game for McQueen and the ninth time he has shot 50 percent or better from the field.
