CLARION - Lloyd and Jamar Harrison combined for 37 points, 16 rebounds, five assists and two steals to lead the Clarion University men's basketball team to a key early season PSAC-West win over Slippery Rock 76-73 Saturday afternoon at Clarion's Tippin Gym.
Lloyd Harrison, a junior point guard, had a team-high 20 points to go with nine rebounds, five assists and two steals for Clarion (11-6 overall, 3-1 PSAC-West) while junior shooting guard Jamar Harrison, no relation, added 17 points on 8 of 11 shooting while hauling down seven rebounds.
Clarion used a 10-4 run between the 9:15-mark and 5:30-mark of the second half to erase a one-point deficit, 55-54, to take a 64-59 lead with 5:31 left in the game.
Slippery Rock (12-5, 1-3) cut that lead to one, 66-65, with 3:32 to go before Clarion scored four straight points on back-to-back Shameel Carty layups to go ahead 70-65 with 2:46 to play.
The Rock once again fought back getting within two, 72-70, with 1:51 to go, but a Paul McQueen jumper put Clarion back up by four with 1:33 left.
After Slippery Rock hit one of two free throws at the 1:16 point, Lloyd Harrison connected on 2 of 4 free throws to put Clarion ahead by five, 76-71, with 16 seconds to play.
Slippery Rock, however, got a layup from Cecil Brown with 10 seconds left to cut the lead to 76-73, and McQueen missed two free throws with nine seconds to play allowing The Rock one last chance to tie the game. But Mike Evans, Jr.'s 3-pointer with about two seconds was off the mark giving Clarion the victory.
Carty added 15 points and 12 rebounds off the bench for Clarion, while McQueen also had a double-double with 14 points and 11 boards.
Jabril Bailey led Slippery Rock with 21 points and eight rebounds, while Maron Brown had a double-double with 18 points and 11 boards. Evans Jr. chipped in 16 points.
Clarion led 38-35 at halftime and increased that lead to as many as nine, 49-40, five minutes into the second half before Slippery Rock used a 15-5 run to take the lead back with just under 10 minutes to play.
The Golden Eagles return to action at 8 p.m. Wednesday when they host Mercyhurst, while Slippery Rock hosts Lock Haven at 8 p.m. Wednesday as well.
NOTES - Clarion's three PSAC-West wins already exceed last year's total of two ... Carty now has three double-doubles on the year, while McQueen's double-dip was his first of the season. It marks the first time the Golden Eagles have had two players record double-doubles in the same game since Nov. 16, 2008, when McQueen had 11 points and 11 rebounds and Josh Yankee had 19 points and 10 rebounds against the University of Redlands. It is the first time Clarion has had two double-doubles in a PSAC-West contest Feb. 4, 2006, when Leon Kennedy had 17 points and 10 rebounds and Chris Buchanan had 12 points and 10 rebounds vs. IUP at Tippin Gym ... McQueen has now reached double figures in five straight games and in 12 of his past 15 while recording at least seven rebounds in each of his last four games ... Lloyd Harrison has scored in double digits in 10 straight games including three 20-point contest with two 20-point contests in a row ... Clarion is now 10-0 when leading at the half ... The Golden Eagles broke a 2-game losing streak to Slippery Rock and have won 32 of 40 vs. The Rock since 1991. Clarion hasn't lost three in a row to Slippery Rock since a six-game slide from 1988-1990.
