EAGLE WRESTLERS TOP BLOOM 22-17

(BLOOMSBURG, PA.): Clarion won 6 of 10 bouts, including the final three by Clint Podish at 184, Alex Thomas at 197 and Quintas McCorkle at heavyweight as the Golden Eagles rallied to defeat Bloomsburg 22-17 Friday night in NCAA Division I Wrestling.

Held at Nelson Fieldhouse, Clarion raised its record to 4-5 overall and 2-1 in the EWL, while Bloomsburg dropped to 8-7 overall and 0-3 in the EWL.

Trailing 17-13 in team score going to 184 pounds, Clarion sophomore Clint Podish (Sycamore) decisioned Derek Coffey 6-1 to pull the Eagles to within 17-16. Podish had 2 takedowns and a reversal for the win.

Eagle freshman Alex Thomas decisioned Brian Shaw 5-1 in 197 to give Clarion a tenuous 19-17 lead. Thomas took Shaw to his back in the opening period for a 4-0 lead and scored the win.

The match came down to heavyweight and Clarion's Quintas McCorkle won a 2-1 decision over Zac Walsh to give Clarion its 22-17 win. McCorkle was down 1-0 entering the third period, but an escape by McCorkle tied the match, and a second stall call on Walsh gave McCorkle the winning point.

The match started quick for Clarion as the Eagles jumped out to a 13-3 lead. Joe Waltko pinned Joe Bak at 125 at 3:27 for a 6-0 lead.

After Jay Ivanco lost 5-2 to Jason Guffey at 133, Greg Lewis posted a 12-2 major decision over Ian Desole at 141 and the Eagles led 10-3.

In a big match at 149, Clarion #19 ranked James Fleming decisioned #18 Josh Roosa 3-2. Fleming had a second period reversal to tie the match, and an escape in the third to win, giving Clarion a 13-3 lead on the scoreboard.

Bloomsburg won the next three bouts to take a 17-13 lead when #8 Matt Moley defeated #17 Hadley Harrison 7-1 at 157, #10 Ricky Schmelyun won a technical fall over Nick Milano 16-0 at 4:32 at 165, and Nate Graham pinned Steven Cressley at 4:45 at 174.

Clarion's comeback then started with Clint Podish at 184 and the Eagles went on to victory.

Clarion travels to Princeton on Saturday afternoon for a 3pm match, then heads over to Rider to battle the Broncs at 6pm. The 6pm match will air on WCCR-FM, 92.7 in Clarion, and on redzonemedia.com on the internet.
