SUWALA SCORES CAREER HIGH IN LOSS

CLARION - Senior Lizzie Suwala scored a career-high 28 points but it wasn't enough to lift Clarion past visiting Edinboro, as the Fighting Scots downed the Golden Eagles 94-85 in PSAC-West women's basketball action Saturday afternoon at Tippin Gym.

Edinboro (12-7 overall, 3-3 PSAC-West) outscored Clarion (10-9, 1-5) 41-36 in the second half after taking a 53-49 halftime lead.

Kelsey Conklin and Samantha Blazetic each recorded double-doubles for the Fighting Scots with Conklin scoring a team-high 27 points to go with 12 rebounds and Blazetic getting 20 points and 10 rebounds off the bench on 10 of 13 shooting.

Suwala, who was 9 of 15 shooting, also added eight rebounds and three assists for the Golden Eagles, while Bethany Koch had 16 points and nine rebounds. Janelle Zabresky chipped in 15 points and eight boards with Rachel Graeff adding 11 points, four rebounds, and a career-high eight assists. Aleya Miller chipped in nine points while tying a career high with six rebounds.

Renee' Brown added 17 points, eight rebounds and five steals for Edinboro with Casey Heller chipping in 15 points off the bench.

Clarion led by as many as 12, 29-17, midway through the first half before Edinboro ended the half on 24-13 run to take the four-point lead at the break.

The Golden Eagles answered back in the second half using an 8-0 run to take a 65-60 advantag\e on a Koch jumper with 15:56 to play before Edinboro used a 10-0 run to retake the lead for good midway through the half.

Clarion was able to close within a point, 79-78 with 6:42 to play before Edinboro answered with a 10-0 run to put the game away.

The Golden Eagles return to action at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Lock Haven, while Edinboro is at IUP starting at 5:30 p.m.

NOTES - Suwala's previous career high was 24 Nov. 16, 2008, vs. Alderson-Broaddus. She has now scored in double digits in 15 straight games, the longest stretch for a Golden Eagle since Katrina Greer scored in 16 straight in 2007 ... Clarion shot 65.6 percent (21 of 32) in the first half but just 23.3 percent (10 of 43) in the second half ... The Golden Eagles started the game 12 of 13 from the floor while building a 29-18 lead ... The 49 first-half points were the most for Clarion since it led Lock Haven 49-20 at halftime on its way to a 95-71 win over the Lady Eagles Jan. 23, 2008, at Tippin Gym ... On the other hand, the 53 first-half points allowed were the most since allowing 54 to at Pitt-Johnstown Nov. 25, 2003, in a 96-86 loss. The halftime score in that game was Pitt-Johnstown 54-52 ... The 85 points are a season high for the Golden Eagles surpassing the 83 they scored in an 83-80 overtime win at West Chester Dec. 11.
