(HAMPTON, VA.): Clarion 149-pounder James Fleming registered a fall over Oklahoma State's Quinten Fuentes but it wasn't enough as #4 ranked Oklahoma State defeated Clarion 42-6 in NCAA Div. I Wrestling in the second round of the 30th Annual Virginia Duals.
Held at the Hampton Coliseum, Clarion won its opener defeating #25 ranked Old Dominion 20-18 to get to the quarterfinal round against the Cowboys. Clarion wrestles back in the losers bracket on Saturday and will go against the winner of Michigan-Bucknell on Saturday at 10am.
Trailing 10-0 after the first three weight classes, Fleming rallied the Golden Eagles when he pinned Oklahoma State's Quinten Fuentes at 4:06, bring the Eagles to within 10-6. Fuentes entered the match with a 14-6 record and a team leading 11 pins.The Cowboys, who had 9, top 20 ranked wrestlers in the lineup, won their next 6 bouts to win 42-6.
Clarion's #16 ranked Hadley Harrison lost a close 4-2 decision to #14 rated Neil Erisman at 157-pounds. Erisman got an escape and takedown in the second period, while Harrison had an escape in the second and the third. Erisman had riding time.
Joe Waltko lost a 5-1 decision to #9 rated Chris Notte at 125, and Greg Lewis lost a 10-5 decision to #4 rated Jamal Parks at 141.
Clarion won 5 bouts in the opening 20-18 win against Old Dominion. Greg Lewis posted a pin at 141-pounds, James Fleming notched a technical fall at 149, and heavyweight Quintas McCorkle capped won the match with a decision.
Clarion's 5 wins included a 5-2 decision by Jay Ivanco over Justin Lavelle at 133, Lewis pin over Brennan Brumley at 1:10, Fleming followed with a 17-2 technical fall over John Nicholson at 149, Hadley Harrison won 4-3 win over Joey Sheridan at 157 and McCorkle defeated Grant Chapman 9-3 at heavyweight to give the Eagles a big win.
ODU was penalized a team point following 149 for unsportsmanlike conduct.
CLARION NOTES: Michigan lost to Virginia in the opening round 23-10, and Bucknell lost to Oklahoma 28-7...Oklahoma State had 9 wrestlers ranked in the top 20 ... Clarion 184-pounder Clint Podish will miss the Virginia Duals with an injury ... He is expected back for Eastern Michigan on January 15.
