MICHIGAN TOPS CLARION 29-15

(HAMPTON, VA.): Clarion notched a decision from Greg Lewis (New Providence) at 141, then got pins from James Fleming (Fr. West Mifflin) at 149 and Hadley Harrison (Sr. McKean) at 157 to lead 15-7, but Michigan rallied to win the final 5 matches and defeat the Golden Eagles 29-15 at the 30th Annual Virginia Duals on Saturday morning.

Clarion was 1-2 at the Virginia Duals and is now eliminated from the placement rounds with the loss to the Wolverines. The Eagles opened with a 20-18 win over #25 ranked Old Dominion and lost 42-6 to #4 ranked Oklahoma State in the quarterfinals on Friday, then lost to Michigan on Saturday.

Held at the Hampton Coliseum, Clarion trailed 7-0 after two bouts when the Eagles stormed back to take a 15-7 lead. Lewis got the streak rolling with a 7-3 decision over the Wolverines Mark Weber at 141.

Fleming followed with a pin over Michigan's Mike Sears at 3:46 at 149-pounds, then teammate Hadley Harrison pinned Mark Boyer at 2:42 in the 157-pound bout and Clarion led 15-7.

The Wolverines came back to win when Aaron Hynes decisioned Nick Milano 4-1 at 165, #20 Justin Zeerip pinned Steven Cressley at 2:17, Hunter Collins majored Justin McCrillis 10-1 at 184, #9 Anthony Biondo decisioned Alex Thomas 8-2 at 197 and Ben Apland pinned Quintas McCorkle at 4:24 at heavyweight.

Michigan's Sean Boyle opened the match with a 6-1 decision over Trey Hicks, and Zac Stevens major decisioned Jay Ivanco 10-2 at 133.

Fleming had a 3-0 record at the duals, posting a technical fall and two pins in his three matches, raising his season record to 14-5 at 149-pounds. Harrison and Lewis were both 2-1 respectively, getting a pin and a decision for their two victories. Harrison is now 21-6, while Lewis is 7-8, but 2-1 at 141-pounds.

CLARION NOTES: Clarion 184-pounder Clint Podish missed the Virginia Duals with an injury ... He is expected back when Clarion travels to Eastern Michigan on Friday, January 15... Clarion hosts EWL and PSAC rival Edinboro on Sunday, January 17th at 2pm.
