(Clarion, Pa.): Clarion's Derek Nelson (Fr. Mount Joy/Donegal) won three individual events on Saturday, but Grove City topped the Golden Eagles 160-120 in the opening dual meet of the season for the Clarion Men's Swimming team.
Held at W.S. Tippin Natatorium on Saturday, Grove City finished first with 160 points and Clarion was second with 120. The event was Clarion's 2010-11 season opener.
Nelson, a freshman, won the 100 breaststroke (1:01.85), 200 breaststroke (2:15.09) and the 200 I.M. (2:10.10) races.
Also posting wins for the Golden Eagles were
Scott Harvey (Fr. Macungie/Emmaus), Garet Weston (Sr. Indiana) and Joe Welsh (So. Erie/Strong Vincent).
Harvey won the 1650 (17:35.52), Weston took the 100 backstroke (55.78) and Welch the 100 butterfly (54.91).
The 200 medley relay team of Jon Kofmehl, Nelson, Weston and Ward also won their event.
Led by 11th year head coach Mark VanDyke, Clarion will swim at Carnegie Mellon next Saturday.
