Clarion University left offensive tackle Reggie Wells (Library, Pa. - South Park), junior defensive noseguard
Troy Bowers (Columbus, Ohio - Westerville South) and right offensive guard Ryan Duchon (Sr. Alliance, Ohio) were recently named Football All-Americans.
Wells, who played in the Whataburger Cactus Bowl on January 10th in Kingsville, Texas, was named as a First Team All-American on the Associated Press "Little All-America Team" and was a second team All-
American on the Don Hansen Football Gazette squad.
Prior to their announcement, Wells was also named as a First team All-America selected by the AFCA (American Football Coaches Association) and second team by D2 Football.com.
Bowers meanwhile was named as a Second Team Associated Press All-American and a First Team All-American by Don Hansen's Football Gazette. He also added Second Team Daktronics All-America honors to his previously announced First Team All-America honors by D2 Football.com.
Duchon marked his first All-America appearance. The talented four-year offensive guard was named as an Honorable Mention All-America by Don Hansen's Football Gazette.
Wells, a 6-4, 310-pound, senior, left offensive tackle, has been scouted by every NFL team his senior season. A quick, strong and agile lineman, Wells runs a 5.0 - 40 yard dash and is known for getting two and three blocks on individual plays. He helped lead Clarion's running game to the #1 spot in the PSAC while averaging 273 yards per game. That total also ranked 6th in all of NCAA Division II in the regular season. Clarion also posted its top two single game rushing performances this year when the Eagles ran for 519 yards against Glenville State in a 59-38 win, and 468 yards against Lock Haven in a 34-31 victory. Wells was First Team PSAC-West pick in 2002 and 2001, plus was a Football Gazette Honorable Mention All-American last year. He was a four-year starter and one of the team captains in 2002. Reggie is a Communication major and the son of Diane and Reggie Wells. His father (Reggie) was a basketball All-American at Clarion and a 1990 Clarion Sports Hall of Fame inductee.
Bowers, who was named PSAC-West Defensive "Player of the Year" following the season, led the entire PSAC with 27 tackles for loss for a -109 yards, and in quarterback sacks with 12 qb sacks for -77 yards. He finished the season with 70 tackles (39 solos), 2 fumbles caused and a blocked kick and was one of four team captains.
A three year starter, Bowers was a first team PSAC-West choice in 2000 when he led the PSAC in tfl's with 20 (-77 yards) and posted 8 sacks for -42 yards along with 41 tackles and 1 fumble recovery. As a freshman in 1999 he had 33 tackles, 6 tfl's and 4 sacks and he sat out the 2001 season. In his career Bowers has accumulated 144 tackles (70 solos), 53 tfl's for -218 yards, 24 qb sacks for -149 yards and 5 fumbles caused. He is the son of Deborah Bowers.
Duchon, a 6-3, 310-pound, senior, offensive guard, became a 4-year All-Conference selection this season. He was a second team PSAC-West choice in 2002, 2001 and 1999, while making the PSAC-West first team in 2000. Consistently a top lineman at Clarion throughout his career, Ryan is a very strong, physical and agile guard for his size. Like Wells, he was a vital cog in the Clarion offensive line helping the Eagles to a PSAC leading 273 rushing yards per game average and a sixth ranking in all of Division II. Duchon was a first team PSAC-West choice in 2000, and a second team selection in 1999, 2001 and 2002. Ryan is a Management major at Clarion and is the son of Jerry and Tami Duchon..
CLARION NOTES: Also announced recently were the Don Hansen Football Gazette All-Region teams. Named to the First team All-Region were Wells, Bowers and Duchon, while second team Northeast Region honors were earned by
Jabari Weatherspoon, an outside linebacker... The Daktronics Northeast Region quad was also announced and has Wells, Bowers and Duchon being named first team Northeast Region which was released over the holidays. Weatherspoon, a 6-3, 230-pound, junior, outside linebacker, came on in 2002 to have his best season posting 57 tackles, 15 tfl's for - 54 yards, 6 sacks for -34 yards, 3 fumbles caused and 1 interception. He moved to outside linebacker from strong safety where he lettered his first two seasons.
