CLARION DROPS TIGHT ONE TO URBANA

CLARION – Urbana (Ohio) used a 19-7 run at the start of the second half to break open a one-point game and get a 60-53 win over Clarion in non-conference women's basketball action Friday night at Clarion's Tippin Gym.
 
Clarion (1-3) trailed 32-31 at halftime but came out cold in the second half shooting 36 percent (9 of 25) in the half with seven of the nine made baskets coming in the final 7:07.
 
The cold start to the second half by the Golden Eagles allowed the Blue Knights (3-4) to extend their lead to 12, 50-38, with 7:47 to play.
 
Clarion still trailed by 12, 54-42, with 4:23 to go but went on a 5-0 run fueled by an Emma Fickel three-pointer to close within seven, 54-47, with 3:15 left. But that was as close as Clarion got.
 
Freshman point guard Raven Jones led Clarion with a season-high 14 points and added three steals and two assists, while freshman guard Mackenzie Clark added 11 points. Freshman forward Ann Deibert chipped in nine points and six rebounds, Courtney Healy had six points, eight rebounds and three blocked shots and Fickel hit a pair of threes for six points.
 
Devonyea Johnson led Urbana with 17 points, Andrea Vogel had 12 points and seven rebounds, Haley Ducey 11 points, seven boards and four assists and Jessica Byrd 11 points.
 
Things started out well for Clarion, as the Golden Eagles used an 11-4 run midway through the first half to open up a 10-point, 27-17, lead. But Urbana ended the half on a 14-4 run to take the one-point halftime lead.
 
Clarion returns to action at 1 p.m. Saturday when it hosts Bloomsburg in the first game of a women-men's doubleheader. The 5-0 Clarion men's team takes on Penn College at 3 p.m.
 
NOTES – Healy's three blocked shots were a season high and give her 66 for her career, the sixth-best mark in school history … Clarion had a season-low 19 turnovers in the game while forcing 18 Urbana giveaways … Clarion shot 42.6 percent for the game (23 of 54) with Urbana shooting 49 percent (24 of 49).
