CONCORD RALLIES PAST CLARION

Courtney Healy

Box Score

FAIRMONT, W. Va. – Concord used a 14-4 game-ending run to rally past the Clarion University women's basketball team for a 59-51 win Friday afternoon on the second day of the Fairmont (W. Va.) Classic.

Clarion (1-7) overcame a 25-14 halftime deficit and led by as many as four midway through the second half before holding a 47-45 lead following a Courtney Healy free throw with 5:03 to play.

But Healy's charity shot was the last point Clarion scored until a Lauren Savulchak jumper with 2:24 left ended a 9-0 Concord run. Those were the last points either team then scored until Concord hit a pair of free throws with 49 seconds left.

Clarion was cold from the field in the first half making just 4 of 31 shots in the opening 20 minutes while getting down by 11 at halftime. But the Golden Eagles responded by hitting five three-pointer in the second half and used a 22-7 run to take a 38-34 lead on Savulchak 3-pointer with just under 10 minutes to play. Healy had nine points, including a pair of threes, and Savulchak six points, on two threes, during the run.

The lead then changed hands five more times down the stretch before Concord grabbed the game's final advantage on an old-school 3-point play by Jolysa Brown with 4:06 to play.

Healy, Clarion's lone upper-class starter as a junior, led the Golden Eagles with her second double-double of the season and the second of her career with 16 points and 11 rebounds. It is the second straight game she has reached double figures, the first time she has reached double digits in back-to-back games in her career. She was 5 of 12 shooting from the field and added three blocked shots giving her 73 in her career, the sixth best mark in school history.

Savulchak added 10 points, four rebounds and two steals, while Raven Jones and Emma Fickel each had eight points with Jones adding a pair of assists and four steals.

Brown had a monster game for Concord with 17 points and 18 rebounds with Camisha Alexander adding 15 points and Andrea Bertrand 11 tallies and eight boards.

Clarion returns to action Monday when it hosts West Chester at 5:30 p.m. The game is the first of a doubleheader at Tippin Gym with the 7-0 Golden Eagle men's team hosting West Chester 20 minutes after the end of the women's game. Both teams are also in action Tuesday at Tippin Gym when they host Millersville with the women's game starting at 5:30 p.m. All four games are available locally on 91.7 FM and on the internet through www.clariongoldeneagles.com.

NOTES – Clarion shot 21 percent (13 of 62) for the game but hit six threes while going 19 of 24 from the free-throw line … Concord outrebounded Clarion 52-41.
