Feb. 11, 2010

Box Score

CLARION--The Clarion University men's basketball team had a cold shooting night in a 72-60 loss to visiting California Thursday night at Tippin Gym.

The Golden Eagles (15-7 overall, 7-2 PSAC-West) shot just 11 percent (2 of 15) from behind the arc and only 30.3 percent (10 of 33) in the second half and never led in the game, as they watched their seven-game win streak come to an end. Clarion shot just 35.6 percent for the game (21 of 59).

Mike Sherry's basket midway through the first half tied the game at 13 and that was the last time the game was tied. California (15-9, 3-6), winners of three straight, followed that basket with a 15-6 run to take a 28-19 lead with 6:33 left in the half. The Vulcans continued to lead by nine, 34-25, with 3:50 left in the half before the Golden Eagles closed the gap to five, 36-31, at halftime.

Clarion then got within one, 38-37, in the opening minuets of the second half but couldn't get any closer. The Golden Eagles still were within shouting distance with just under seven minutes to play trailing 52-49, but Cal went on a 12-6 run to basically put the game away.

Travon Williams led a threesome of Vulcans in double figures with 18 points while adding seven rebounds, three assists, four steals and one block. Kelsey Williams added 16 points and seven rebounds and Rashawd Hatten 13 points and eight rebounds. Chris Moore had a tremendous defensive game with six blocked shots while adding 10 rebounds and five points.

Jamar Harrison led Clarion with 12 points, while Lloyd Harrison added 11 points. Sherry and Shameel Carty each chipped in with nine points with Carty adding 10 rebounds and three assists.

Clarion returns to action at 3 p.m. Saturday at Gannon, while California is at Lock Haven also at 3 p.m. Saturday.
