ERIE - No. 3 and unbeaten Gannon held off an early second-half rally by visiting Clarion to get a 91-70 win over the visiting Golden Eagles Saturday afternoon at the Hammermill Center in Erie.
Gannon (26-0, 10-0 PSAC-West) led by 22, 47-25, at halftime, but Clarion (12-11, 3-7) closed the gap to eight, 55-47, just under seven minutes into the second half. The Lady Knights, though, were able to stop the bleeding by going on a 15-5 run that put them up by 19, 75-56, with 8:24 left.
Lizzie Suwala led Clarion with 21 points, her fifth straight 20-point game, becoming the first Golden Eagle in at least over a decade to record five straight games of 20 or more points.
Rachel Graeff added 13 points, seven assists and five rebounds despite playing just 24 minutes because of foul trouble, and Bethany Koch chipped n 11 points, five rebounds, five assists and three steals. Sara Pratt had eight rebounds and seven points for the Golden Eagles.
Kristina Freeman paced Gannon with 22 points and seven rebounds with Carrie Nolan adding 19 points, five rebounds, three assists and three steals. Brittany Tabron chipped in 16 points and six rebounds, and Tiffany Crocker had 14 points and nine assists.
The game was tight throughout the first half of the first half with the Golden Eagles and Lady Knights tied at 16 seven minutes into the game, and Gannon holding a slight 28-22 lead with 7:39 left. But the Lady Knights ended the half on a 19-3 run to take the 22-point halftime advantage.
Clarion returns to action at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday when it travels to Mercyhurst, while Gannon is at Edinboro at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday.
NOTES - Both Heather Cigich (2004) and Christina Lantz (2002) had four straight games of 20 or more points in the last decade ... Suwala is now two points shy of 950 in her career. That total includes 776 at Clarion and 172 in one year at IUP ... Suwala is averaging 18.2 points per game, which would be the sixth-best mark in Clarion history.
