JOHNSTOWN - The Clarion University baseball team was swept on the road by Pitt-Johnstown Wednesday afternoon at Point Stadium in Johnstown dropping Game One 14-6 and Game Two 8-0.
In the first game, Matt Rossi (2-for-4, 4 RBIs) clubbed a pair of two-run home runs but it wasn't enough for the Golden Eagles (1-5) to overcome a 13-run first inning by Pitt-Johnstown (5-5), which sent 18 men to the plate in the inning while erasing an early 2-0 deficit.
Scott Berkes added a 3-for-4 performance with a triple and a pair of runs scored, while Sean Zimmerman was 2-for-4. Jason Krimsky and Tom Briley also had RBIs for the Golden Eagles in the game.
Erik Kempton took the loss going 1/3 of an inning and allowing eight runs, all earned, on four hits, three walks and a hit batter. He struck out one. T.J. Anderson relieved and didn't retire a batter allowing four runs, two earned, on a pair of hits and two walks. Luke Prazenica then pitched 4 2/3 innings allowing one unearned run on three hits and walk while striking out six with Brett Whitman finishing off allowing one earned run on two hits in one inning of work.
In the second game, Pitt-Johnstown built a 4-0 lead after three innings and cruised to the win.
Kevin Gnacinski took the loss going 3 1/3 innings and allowing five runs, four earned, on seven hits and a walk while striking out one. Eric Panko then went 2/3 of an inning with a pair of strikeouts before Gregg Bandzuh went one inning with two strikeouts. Brandon Slater then pitched one inning allowing three earned runs on three hits and a walk.
Kempton led Clarion's offense going 2-for-3 with a double. Berkes added another hit in three at bats giving him four on the day, while Krimsky was also 1-for-3 giving him a pair of hits in the twinbill.
Clarion returns to action Friday when it opens PSAC-West play with Slippery Rock. The game is scheduled for Clarion at 1 p.m. but could be moved to Slippery Rock depending on the condition of the Golden Eagles' field. The two teams are also slated to meet Saturday at Slippery Rock.
