VISITING CAL SWEEPS TWINBILL FROM CLARION

CLARION - The Clarion University baseball team was swept in its home-opening PSAC-West doubleheader Wednesday by California losing by scores of 6-0 and 13-6.

The losses drop Clarion's record to 1-13 overall and 0-8 in the PSAC-West. The Golden Eagles will host Gannon at 1 p.m. Friday in a PSAC-West doubleheader.

In Game One Wednesday, Cal grabbed an early 2-0 lead in the second inning and then added a run in the fourth and three more in the sixth. Eric Panko took the loss going two innings and allowing two earned runs on three hits and two walks while striking out one. Gregg Bandzuh went four innings and allowed four earned runs on eight hits. Brett Whitman finished off going one scoreless inning with a strikeout.

Clarion had two hits in the first game both by Ken Morgan who was 2-for-2.

In the second game, Cal (15-10 overall, 10-2 PSAC-West) jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning and then added five in the second, two in the third and two in the fourth before Clarion responded with single runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth and three in the seventh. The Vulcans also scored once in the sixth.

Clarion used seven pitches in the game with T.J. Anderson starting and taking the loss going 1 1/3 innings and allowing seven runs, all earned, on three hits and four walks while hitting two batters. Mark White allowed one run in 2/3 of an inning, Jeremy Smith two runs in no inning of work, Kevin Gnacinski two runs in two innings of work and Luke Prazenica one run in one inning of work. Bill Ruhland and Whitman each pitched scoreless innings.

On offense, Sean Zimmerman was 3-for-4 with two doubles and two runs scored, while Tom Briley was 2-for-5. Scott Berkes, Dan Dobson, Kevin Keebler and Rob Wielcok each had RBIs. Joey Harrison added a double and a run scored.
