GOLDEN EAGLES FALL ON THE ROAD

FLORENCE, S.C. - Francis Marion put up a 10-spot in the sixth inning on its way to an 18-3 win over Clarion in collegiate baseball action Tuesday afternoon at Francis Marion.

The Golden Eagles (1-3) led 3-0 at the end of a half inning, but Francis Marion scored twice in the second and three times in the third to take the lead before adding two more in the fifth and the 10-spot in the sixth.

Scott Berkes took the loss for Clarion going 4 1/3 innings and allowing seven runs, five earned, on nine hits and two walks while striking out one. Kevin Gnacinski then went 2/3 of an inning allowing five runs, all earned, on five hits while striking out one. Also pitching for Clarion were Bill Ruhland (2/3 IP, 3 R, 3 ER, 2 H), Jeremy Smith (1/3 IP, 2 R, 2 ER, 4 H, 1 BB) and Brett Whitman (2 IP, 1 R, 1 ER, 5 H, 1 BB).

Clarion was outhit by Francis Marion 25-5. Joey Harrison had a pair of hits for the Golden Eagles, while Jason Krimsky, Sean Zimmerman and T.J. Anderson each had one. Zimmerman's and Anderson's were each doubles.

All three Clarion runs came after two outs in the first. Matt Rossi walked, Krimsky singled him to third and Zimmerman doubled home Rossi down the leftfield line. Ken Morgan then walked before two runners scored when Eric Kempton reached on a throwing error by shortstop Barrett Kleinknecht.

Clarion returns to action with three games Wednesday. The Golden Eagles are at Limestone at 1 p.m. and then have a doubleheader starting at 5:30 p.m. at Belmont Abbey.
