CLARION - Despite a gallant comeback attempt in Game Two, the Clarion University softball team was swept in a non-conference doubleheader by visiting Gannon Monday afternoon at Memorial Field.
In Game One, Gannon won 10-0 in five innings, and in Game Two the Lady Knights took home a 9-6 win despite five runs in the final two innings by the Golden Eagles.
In the second game, Gannon led 8-1 going to the sixth, but Clarion made things interesting with a pair of runs in the sixth thanks to a two-run double by Nicole Lollo.
Then, after Gannon got a run back in the top of the seventh, the Golden Eagles scored three more times in the bottom of the inning thanks to a two-run double by Kacie Nemeth and an RBI double by Carlie Cook. Clarion then had the tying run at the plate with no one out before Gannon closed the door on the Golden Eagle rally.
Nicole Lindner set the table for Clarion going 3-for-4 with a run scored out of the leadoff spot. Nemeth was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored, while Rebecca Lynch was 2-for-4 with a run scored. Marissa Myers was also 2-for-4 with Cook going 1-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored and Lollo going 1-for-4 with two RBIs. Randi Pace also scored two runs.
Megan Daley took the loss going four innings and allowing eight runs, seven earned, on 12 hits and a strikeout. Erica Burkey finished the last three innings allowing one unearned run on two hits and three walks.
In Game One, Gannon scored four in the first, three in the second and three in the third to open up a quick 10-0 lead. Nemeth started and took the loss going 1 1/3 innings allowing seven runs, all earned, on five hits and three walks. Burkey went 2/3 of an inning allowing three runs, all earned, despite not allowing a hit. She walked five. Daley finished the last three innings scoreless allowing one hit and one walk while striking out three.
Gannon took advantage of nine Clarion walks to score the 10 runs despite just six hits.
Lindner had a double for Clarion, while Lynch and Lollo each had singles.
Clarion (3-26) returns to action Tuesday at Edinboro.
