CLARION - The Clarion University baseball team continued to show signs of improvement Monday using a four-run fifth inning to beat Mansfield 5-4 in the first game of a twinbill at Clarion.
The victory was the fourth in eight days for the Golden Eagles, who fell in the second gamf 11-0.
In Game One, the Golden Eagles trailed 4-1 going to the bottom of the fifth but got a break when Tom Briley struck out for what should have been the second out of the inning. The ball, however, got past the catcher for a wild pitch allowing Briley to reach first safely.
Clarion then took advantage with back-to-back singles by Scott Berkes and Erik Kempton with the Kempton hit driving home Briley. Then, after a strikeout, Ken Morgan singled home Berkes to get the Golden Eagles within a run, and Kevin Keebler walked to load the bases. Mark White came through with a two-run single to give Clarion the lead.
T.J. Anderson then worked out of a bases loaded two-out jam in the sixth before Mark White struck out the side in the seventh to earn his second save of the year.
Anderson got the win in relief of Bill Ruhland going 2 1/3 innings and allowing no runs on four walks and two hits. He struck out two. Ruhland started and went 3 2/3 innings allowing four runs, all earned, on four hits, three walks and two hit batters. He also struck out two.
Morgan continued his hot hitting going 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored.
In the nightcap, a six-run fifth helped Mansfield break open a 4-0 lead and get the 11-0 win.
Kevin Gnacinski took the loss going five innings and allowing four runs, only one earned, on five hits, two walks and a hit batter. He struck out four. Joey Harrison didn't record an out facing four batters, hitting one and allowing three hits. He was charged with four earned runs. Jeremy Smith went one inning allowing two runs on two hits with a strikeout and a hit batter, and Jordan Labue allowed one run on one hit and a walk while also striking out one in one inning of work.
Kempton was 2-for-3 as was Mark White. Mark White and Jason Krimsky had doubles for Clarion.
The Golden Eagles return to action at 1 p.m. Wednesday when they host Pitt-Johnstown in a non-conference doubleheader.
NOTES - Clarion is now 5-23 overall.
