CLARION - Megan Daley had the best day of her young career in the circle allowing one run on six hits and a walk while striking out four to lead Clarion to a 6-1 Game One win over visiting Mansfield in PSAC-Central play Friday afternoon.
The victory was Clarion's second conference win of the year. Mansfield came back to take Game Two 5-4 despite a gallant Clarion comeback attempt.
In Game One, Daley was backed up by a four-run third and a two-run fourth that staked the Golden Eagles to a 6-0 lead. She carried the shutout into the seventh before Mansfield was able to touch her up for a run.
Rachelle Yarger had a big two-run single in the four-run third, while Falicia Witmer added a two-run single in the fourth. Katie Baun also had an RBI for Clarion, while Kacie Nemeth, Nicole Lollo and Rebecca Lynch each had doubles. Nemeth scored two runs, as did Carlie Cook, while Lynch and Lollo also scored.
In Game Two, Mansfield used a five-run third to take a 5-0 lead. But Clarion fought back with a pair of runs in the fifth and then scored twice more in the seventh to get within a run. The Golden Eagles then had the tying run at third and the winning run at second but couldn't quite tie or win the game.
Yarger led Clarion going 3-for-3 in the game to raise her batting average to .288 on the season with her fourth multiple-hit game of the year including her third three-hit contest. Lynch and Nemeth each had RBIs.
Erica Burkey took the loss going seven innings and allowing five runs, three earned, on five hits and two walks while striking out three.
NOTES - Clarion is 4-29 overall and 2-12 in the PSAC-Central. It is the first multiple-win conference season for the Golden Eagles since going 3-13-1 in 2005.
