VISITING GANNON TAKES TWINBILL FROM CLARION

CLARION - Gannon swept a PSAC-West doubleheader from homestanding Clarion Friday afternoon beating the Golden Eagles by counts of 4-2 and 10-0.

The two teams will complete their season series with a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. Saturday at Gannon.

In Game One, Jeff Jones' one-out, two-run home run in the top of the seventh inning broke a 2-2 tie and gave Gannon the win.

Gannon (15-13, 9-5 PSAC-West) took a 2-0 lead with a first-inning two-run shot by Kolten Hoffman before Clarion (1-15, 0-10) tied the game with single runs in the second and third.

In the second, Sean Zimmerman had a leadoff double and then scored on a one-out Ken Morgan double. The Golden Eagles then tied the game with an unearned run in the third when Scott Berkes' two-out single drove home Tom Briley, who started the rally with a two-out single.

Brandon Slater pitched well for Clarion despite taking the loss. He went 6 1/3 innings and allowed four earned runs on four hits, four walks and one hit batter while striking out five. Brett Whitman finished off with 2/3 of an inning scoreless with one strikeout.

In Game Two, Gannon scored three in the first and one in the second before breaking the game open with a five-spot in the fourth.

Clarion's lone run came in the bottom of the seventh when Mark White scored on a two-out error. Briley led the Eagles offense going 2-for-3 while it was his hit ball that was botched by Gannon leading to Clarion's run.

Berkes took the loss going 3 2/3 innings and allowing nine runs, seven earned, on four walks and three strikeouts. He hit a batter. Bill Ruhland went 1 1/3 scoreless allowing one hit while striking out one. T.J. Anderson finished off going two innings and allowing one earned run on one hit and two walks while striking out three.
