CLARION FALLS TO SHIP

CLARION - The Clarion University softball team was swept in a doubleheader by Shippensburg Saturday at Clarion's Memorial Field falling by scores of 9-6 and 8-1.

The losses drop Clarion to 2-19 on the season. The Golden Eagles will return to action Tuesday at Mansfield.

In Game One, Shippensburg (11-19) rallied past Clarion by scoring eight runs in the final four innings. The Golden Eagles led 3-1 after three thanks to a three-run third, but Shippensburg retook the lead with three in the fourth and then added four in the sixth and one in the seventh. Clarion tried to respond platting a run in the sixth and then scoring two in the seventh while brining the tying run to the plate.

Megan Daley started and relieved and took the loss. She lasted 5 2/3 innings as a starter giving up eight runs, six earned, on 11 hits and six walks while striking out six. She then returned in the seventh and pitched a scoreless inning allowing a hit while also striking out a batter to give her a career-high seven strikeouts in the game. Erica Burkey pitched 1/3 of an inning allowing one earned run on one hit and two walks.

On offense, Clarion had 12 hits led by Nicole Lollo who was 3-for-3 with three singles and a walk while also scoring a run and driving in a run. Marissa Myers was 2-for-3 with a pair of singles and an RBI, while Katie Baun was 2-for-3 with two singles while also reaching on an error and picking up an RBI. Randi Pace and Rachelle Yarger also had RBIs for Clarion with Carlie Cook scoring two runs while going 1-for-4 with a single while also reaching on an error. Rebecca Lynch, Kacie Nemeth and Juliane Genevro also scored runs with Nemeth going 1-for-2 with a double while also being hit by a pitch and laying down a sacrifice bunt..

In Game Two, Shippensburg scored three times in the first off Daley, who lasted 1/3 of an inning allowing three earned runs on five hits. Burkey relieved and allowed five runs, only one of which was earned, on nine hits and three walks in 6 2/3 innings of work. Ship added four runs in the fourth and one in the sixth.

Clarion's lone run came with two outs in the sixth when Nemeth singled, moved to second on a wild pitch and scored on a single to right by Cook. Nemeth was 2-for-3 in the game, while Cook, Pace and Yarger also added hits.
