ERIE - The Clarion University baseball team dropped a pair of close PSAC-West games at Gannon Saturday losing by scores of 5-3 and 8-5.
Ken Morgan had a great game one for Clarion with a double and a home run, while Erik Kempton and Sean Zimmerman each had a pair of hits in the nightcap including a double by Kempton, his second of the day.
The losses drop Clarion to 1-17 overall and 0-12 in the PSAC-West.
In Game One, Gannon scored twice in the second and three times in the third to erase a 1-0 deficit and take a 5-1 lead. Clarion rallied with two in the fourth, but the Golden Eagles were shutout in the final three innings.
Eric Panko took the complete-game loss going six innings and allowing five earned runs on eight hits and three walks while striking out seven. Morgan was 3-for-3 at the plate with the double and homer while scoring two runs and driving in one. Kempton added an RBI while hitting a double. Zimmerman scored Clarions other run.
In Game Two, Clarion led 1-0 after three before Gannon tied the game with a run in the fourth and then took the lead with three in the fifth 4-1. The Golden Eagles rallied with three of their own in the sixth to retie the game at four, but the Golden Knights answered with four in the bottom of the sixth before Clarion scored on in the seventh and had a runner on second with one out.
Gregg Bandzuh took the loss going five-plus innings and allowing five runs, all earned, on eight hits and two walks while striking out five. Kevin Gnacinski pitched 1/3 of an inning allowing three runs, two earned on one hit and a walk while Brett Whitman finished off with 2/3 of an inning scoreless allowing one hit. It ran Whitman's scoreless streak to 5 1/3 innings of relief over the last two weeks.
Kempton was 2-for-4 with the double, an RBI and a run scored with Zimmerman also going 2-for-4. Jason Krimsky added a double, an RBI and a run scored, while Spencer White had a two-run pinch-hit single. Scott Berkes also added an RBI, while Tom Briley scored two runs and Morgan one.
Clarion returns to action Monday when it hosts Washington Adventist in a non-conference doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
