SHIPPENSBURG – Despite its best shooting day of the season, the Clarion University women's basketball team fell 78-69 on the road to Shippensburg Saturday afternoon.
The Golden Eagles (2-9) shot 49.1 percent (26 of 53) including 68 percent (17 of 25) in the second half and rallied from a 15-point halftime deficit to get within a point a couple of times in the second half but could never get all the way over the hump.
A 22-9 run to start the second half cut a 36-21 halftime deficit to 45-43 with 14:27 left, and then Clarion got within a point, 58-57, with 6:56 to play thanks to an 8-2 run fueled by four points from
Courtney Healy, including a three-pointer.
Shippensburg (4-7) fended off that attack and got the lead back to six, 63-57, with 5:58 to play, but Clarion rallied again thanks to another three-pointer from Healy and a
Joanna Catalano layup with 4:49 left that closed to gap back to one, 63-62.
Kasey Gardner, though, answered with a three-pointer of her own for the Lady Raiders starting an 11-4 run that put the game away.
Healy and
Emma Fickel tied for team-high honors with 14 points each for Clarion with
Raven Jones adding 11 points and four assists off the bench.
Lauren Savulchak chipped in nine points and 11 rebounds off the pine with
Ann Deibert contributing seven points and six boards.
Gardner led all scorers with 24 points for Shippensburg and added eight rebounds, five assists and five steals. Shawna Wert added 20 points, Lindsay Howard 13 and Sarah Strybuc 11 for the Lady Raiders.
Clarion returns to action at 1 p.m. Sunday at Cheyney.
