CHEYNEY – Freshman Emma Fickel scored a career-high 24 points while hitting a career-best six three-pointers, and the Clarion University women's basketball team outscored Cheyney by 27 points over the final 22 minutes to pick up its second win in the last four games, 65-43, at Cheyney Sunday afternoon.

Fickel, who added eight rebounds, shot 8 of 18 from the field including 6 of 13 from beyond the arc helping Clarion (3-9) outscored Cheyney 46-19 in the final 22 minutes including 40-19 in the second half. Fickel scored 17 of her points and hit five of her three-pointers in the second half.

Freshman point guard Raven Jones also played a key role in the second-half surge with 12 points and three assists in the half on her way to 14 points and five helpers. She shot 7 of 12 from the field and scored eight of her points in the first 10 minutes of the second half while Clarion was on a game-changing 26-7 run.

Cheyney (4-8) led 24-19 with 2:01 to play in the first half before Clarion ended the half on a 6-0 spurt that included four free throws. The Golden Eagles, behind Jones, then started the second half on a 20-7 run to take control of the game.

Clarion shot 54.8 percent (17 of 31) from the field in the second half, the second straight game the Golden Eagles were over 50 percent in the second half. That helped them overcome a cold-shooting first half (33.3 percent) to shoot 45.5 percent for the game.

Mackenzie Clark added eight points, Ann Deibert seven points and six rebounds and Lauren Savulchak four points and seven boards for the Golden Eagles.

Nadirah Brown paced Cheyney with 17 points and eight rebounds.

Clarion is back in action at 6 p.m. Wednesday when it starts PSAC-West play at Slippery Rock. The Golden Eagles then return home to face Edinboro at 1 p.m. Saturday.

NOTES – It was the fourth time Fickel has gone over 20 points this season. Her previous team-high was 22 points in the season opener against East Stroudsburg … Fickel has hit five or more threes three times this season and has 39 three-pointers on the year. That is the most three-pointers by a Clarion freshman since Allison Stodart hit 57 in 1999-2000.
