CLARION -
Amanda Gough played arguably her best game as a Clarion Golden Eagle Friday night as Clarion knocked off PSAC West-leading Cal 3-2. Gough finished with 32 assists, 16 digs, and seven kills with the last being the dagger.
Clarion (12-9, 8-4) took set one 25-19 before falling 25-16 and 25-20 in sets two and three. Down 2-1, Clarion battled back with a 25-18 victory in set four before downing the Vulcans 15-11 in set five.
Gough, a Senior setter from Chesterton, Indiana, pounded a kill off of a strange bounce to put Clarion up 14-11 in the fifth set. Cal had inched back to within two before Gough slammed down a kill sending the crowd into a frenzy.
Kellie Bartman tallied the final kill to give Clarion it's most decisive victory on the season.
Bartman finished with a team-high 18 kills while picking up 14 digs and one block.
Hannah Heeter was a force in the middle as she had seven kills, two assists, and a game-high five blocks. The Clarion defense was also aided by
Rebecca Webb who added four blocks to compliment Heeter's five. Also on defense,
Rhianon Brady put up 27 digs, a high for either squad.
Kaitlyn Anderson amassed thirteen kills and four digs in the win.
Cal (20-4, 10-2) had a balanced attack, led by Brandy harris who had twelve kills. Bridget Bielich and Meghan Franz pitched in 11 kills apiece. Kelly Fromknecht led Cal with 24 assists and Sara McMullen tallied 25 digs.
The game kicked off Clarion's Breast Cancer Awareness Weekend which will continue at 12 p.m. tomorrow with the volleyball team returning to face IUP inside Tippin. The football team will also don new blue and pink jerseys as they take on IUP at Memorial Stadium at 3 p.m.
