FICKEL SCORES 18 BUT CLARION FALLS TO TIFFIN

CLARION – Clarion's Emma Fickel scored 18 points including four three-pointers, but Tiffin used a 10-0 run in the second half to pull away from the Golden Eagles and get a 65-51 win in Clarion's season opener Tuesday night at Tippin Gym.
 
Clarion, which trailed 26-19 at halftime, had closed to within three, 48-45, following a Fickel three-pointer with 6:18 to play. But Tiffin rolled off the next 10 points to push the lead to double digits with just over three minutes to play.
 
Tiffin (2-0) had taken a 42-32 lead with 10:23 left before Clarion (0-1) went on a 13-6 run fueled by three treys by Fickel to get back within three.
 
The Dragons had the advantage on the glass (44-30), at the free-throw line (22 of 28 compared to 5 of 8 for Clarion), in second-chance points (13-5) and on points-off-turnovers (28-12).
 
Ann Deibert added 11 points and seven rebounds for Clarion, while Mandy Jaeb led Tiffin with 22 points and nine rebounds. Karli Mast added 14 points, four assists and three rebounds.
 
The game was even for most of the first half with Clarion leading 15-13 with 6:36 to play. But Tiffin went on a 13-2 run to take the seven-point halftime lead.
 
Clarion returns to action at 3 p.m. Saturday at Kutztown.
 
NOTES – Clarion lost for just the third time in a home opener under 23rd year head coach Gie Parsons and for the first time since the 2005-06 season. The Golden Eagles are 20-3 in home openers under Parsons and 19-4 in season openers … Fickel led the PSAC in three's per game last year at 3.4, which was the top mark in the NCAA regardless of division by a freshman.
