LAKERS RALLY PAST CLARION 42-38 ON SENIOR DAY

GAME STATS AND SCORING SUMMARY

                (Clarion, Pa.): Clarion defensive back Chris Wilson's 99-yard interception return for a td gave Clarion a 38-14 lead with 6:50 left in the third quarter, but Mercyhurst rallied with 28-unanswered points capped by a Richie Sanders 1- yard run with 32-seconds remaining to give Mercyhurst a 42-38 win over Clarion on Saturday afternoon.
               
                Senior Day at Memorial  Stadium, Clarion dropped to 2-8 overall and 2-5 in the PSAC-Western Division, while Mercyhurst raised its overall record to 4-6 and 2-5 in the PSAC-West.
 
                With Mercyhurst ahead 14-10 in the second quarter, Clarion tried to take command of the game. Junior running back Patrick Graham-Murphy scored on a nifty 16-yard touchdown run capping a 6-play, 84-yard drive to give the Golden Eagles a 17-14 lead with 10:24 to play in the second. QB Ben Fiscus had a 38 yard run and hit passes of 18 yards to Robert Tantlinger and 22 to Jon Reid to help setup the td.
 
                Clarion drove 71 yards on 8 plays to take a 24-14 lead at 5:49 of the second. Fiscus hit Ryan Wolfe on a 26-yard pass to the Mercyhurst 6, and on first and goal, Graham-Murphy scored his third rushing td of the day for  a 24-14 lead.
 
                Clarion sophomore qb Ben Fiscus completed 7 of 11 passes for 122 yards and rushed for 77 yards in the first half, but suffered bruised ribs before halftime and did not return in the second half.
 
                In spite of losing Fiscus, Clarion boosted its lead to 38-14 by midway through the third quarter.
 
                Mercyhurst fumbled the second half kickoff and Andrew Paronish  scooped up the pigskin at the LAker 38 and returned to the Mercyhurst 12. A personal foul on the play gave the Eagles a first and goal at the 6, and on second down, Greham0-Murphy fumbled going into the endzone and teammate Jon Reid recoevered to make it 31-14 at 14:04 of the third.
 
                Mercyhurst drove the ball drove the ball to the Clarion 5, but turned it over on downs. Sophomore qb Ryan Voisey fumbled and Mercyhurst recovered at the Eagle 10. Then came Wilson's big interception.
 
                On fourth and goal at the Clarion 8, Anthony Vednemia's pass was deflected at the 1-yard line and senior corner Chris Wilson stepped in front, intercepted at the 1 yard line, and went 99-yards for a Clarion td. On the return up the left sideline, he revesred his field at the Laker 40 to about the left hash, then back to the left sideline to the 25, then back to the middle of the field and into the endzone. (He returned an interception 97-yards for a score in last year's game).
 
                Mercyhurst, who had 412 offensive yards in the second half, mounted a furious comeback.
 
                Vendemia completed a 17-yard pass to R.J. Miller with 12-seconds left in the third to make it 38-21.
 
                After a two-yard punt that gave Mercyhurst the ball on the 50, the Lakers score on their next possession going 50-yards in 2 plays. Vendemia threw a jump ball that Trevor Kenndey wrestled away from coverage for a 46-yard gain. Allen Jones scored on a 4-yard run and the Lakers were behind 38-28.
 
                The Eagles were pinned on their own five yard line on its next possession, then a 21-yard punt had the Lakers at the Clarion 26. Vendemia hooked up with fullback Jef Groene on a 7-yard td pass to bring Mercyhurst to within 38-35 with 8:28 left in the fourth quarter.
 
                Mercyhurst then drove 94-yards to win the game. The Lakes took over with 4:31 on the clock and went94-yards in 11 plays. Vendemia hit a big 13-yard pass from the Eagle 16 to the 3. A clarin penalty placed the ball at the 1 and Sanders rushed over on the next play to give the Lakes a 42-38 lead.
 
                Clarion returned the kickoff to the 35, and with a personal foul on Mercyhurst, put the ball in play from midfield with 25-seconds left. Another Mercyhurst penalty n the next play had the Eagles at the M3rcyhurst 35. Third team qb Anthony Omogrosso, who replaced Voisey in the third quarter after Voisey was injured, ran for 5-yards and went out of bounds at the 30 with 6.8 seconds remaining.
 
                Omogrosso tossed the ball up for grabs at the Laker 5, but Mercyhurst's Pat Behm intercepted the  ball on the final play to preserve a Laker win.
 
                Clarion had 318 yards of offense in the game, managed only 34 yards in the second half after Fiscus went out of the game. Patrick Graham-Murphy rushed for 107 yards and 3 td's on 23-carries.
 
                Barrington Morrison led the Clarion “D” with 3 tfl's and 2 sacks, while senior Shawn Sopic led the team with 11 tackles and 1 tfl.
 
                Mercyhurst  had 548 yards of total offense including 196 rushing yards and 352 passing yards.
 
                Vendemia completed 21 of 35 passes for 352 yards and 2 td's. Trevor Kennedy caught 10 passes for 166 yards, while Sanders rushed 24-times for 125 yards and 3 td's.

                Clarion ends the season next Saturday when the Golden Eagles visit Millersville. Kickoff is set for 1pm.
