CLARION LOSES 37-12 TO #24 EDINBORO

                (CLARION, Pa.):  Clarion University's #6 ranked James Fleming (Jr. West Mifflin) at 157 and #7 ranked Bekzod Abdurakhmonov (Sr. Tashkent, Uzbekistan) at 165 won by fall but it wasn't enough as #24 ranked Edinboro defeated Clarion 37-12 in NCAA Division I Wrestling on Monday night.
 
                Held at Clarion's Waldo S. Tippin Gymnasium, Clarion dropped to 0-3 on the season and 0-1 in the Eastern Wrestling League, while #24 rated Edinboro raised its record to 1-1 overall and 1-0 in the EWL.
 
                Trailing 22-0 heading into 157-pounds, Clarion's Fleming came out and took control of his match early. Using front headlocks, Fleming scored two, first period takedowns to lead 4-1. He then posted a three point near fall, and hooked up a cradle and pinned Casey Fuller at 1:46 of the match. Fleming pushed his season record to 10-1 and is now 69-13 in his career with the Golden Eagles.
 
                The Golden Eagles next looked to Abdurakhmonov and the senior 165-pounder also registered a pin. He scored two takedowns in the first period to take a 4-1 lead, then used a half-nelson to pin Saylor at 1:37 of the match to pull the Eagles to within 22-12. Bekzod is now 13-2 on the season and has a 2-year record of 51-14.
 
                Edinboro answered with four wins in the final four weight classes to cinch the victory. Edinboro's Chris Hrunka decisioned Ryan Darch 7-0 at 174, then Vic Avery decisioned the Eagles Nick Milano 7-2 at 184.
 
                Edinboro's Chris Honeycutt, ranked third in the country at 197, scored a hard-fought 11-6 win over Clarion's Alex Thomas who is ranked 19th. With Honeycutt ahead 6-2 in the second, Thomas scored a takedown on the edge to pull within 6-4. Honeycutt escaped to make it 7-4 before the period ended. Honeycutt chose down to start the third, and was nearly put to his back by Thomas, but the Scot veteran escaped and posted a takedown to go ahead 10-4. Thomas hit a nice switch and reversed Honeycutt to close within 10-6 but time ran out.  Honeycutt had riding time for his 11-6 win.
 
                The Boro's Ernest James, ranked 17th, scored an early takedown and cradled and pinned Clarion's Quintas McCorkle, ranked 18th, at 1:16 to close the bout.
 
                Edinboro got off to a 22-0 start when Kory Mines scored a tech. fall against Vic Lipari (20-3) at 125, then #8 A.J. Schopp pinned Joe Waltko st 4:43 at 133; while #18 Mitchell Port pinned Tyler Bedelyon at 1:50 and #10 rated David Habat had a 15-0 technical fall over Cameron Moran at 149.
 
                CLARION NOTES: Clarion still leads the overall series 32-23 … Edinboro has an 18-6 record against Clarion in the EWL. … Clarion next wrestles at the Midlands on Dec. 29-30. The Eagles return to dual meet action on Jan. 15 at Eastern Michigan.
