MILLERSVILLE, Pa. – Red-shirt freshman forward
Hannah Heeter came within a point and a rebound of her first career double-double, but Millersville used two big runs to defeat visiting Clarion 72-53 in PSAC women's basketball action Sunday afternoon.
Heeter, playing in just her third game after joining the Golden Eagles following volleyball season, had nine points and nine rebounds while shooting 4 of 6 from the field. She has 22 points and 17 rebounds in her last two games and is averaging 7.3 ppg and 5.7 rpg while shooting 56.3 percent (9 of 16) from the field on the year.
But while Heeter was having a solid game for Clarion (1-4 overall, 1-3 PSAC West), Millersville (4-1, 3-1 PSAC East) used runs of 20-2 in the first half and 17-4 in the second half to pull away.
Clarion led 12-9 6:29 into the game thanks to a pair of 3-pointers from
Emma Fickel, but Millersville scored 20 of the next 22 points, including eight from Mashira Newman, to take a 29-14 lead with 3:23 to play in the first half. The Marauders then pushed the lead to 16, 36-20, at halftime.
Any hope of a Golden Eagle comeback was thwarted early in the second half when Millersville went on the 17-4 run.
Raven Jones had 16 points, five rebounds and four assists for Clarion, while Fickel added nine points on 3 of 7 shooting from three-point range. She also added three rebounds and two steals.
Courtney Healy chipped in with eight points, five rebounds, four steals and two blocked shots. The four swipes tied her career high. It is the fifth time she has had four steals in a game with the previous time before Sunday being Nov. 23, 2010, at Tiffin.
Mackenzie Clark chipped in six rebounds and four assists.
Aurielle Mosley had a double-double with 17 points and 13 rebounds to lead Millersville. She added three blocks and two assists. Newman also had 17 points while chipping in five assists and four steals. Sophia Waters added 15 points, four rebounds, three assists and three steals.
Millersville made hay on Clarion turnovers outscoring the Golden Eagles 29-11 off giveaways including 18-3 in the first half.
Clarion returns to action at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday when it hosts West Virginia Wesleyan. It is one of three homes games for the Golden Eagles this week. Clarion also hosts Shippensburg at 5:30 p.m. Friday and Cheyney at 2 p.m. Saturday before the holiday break.
