Courtney Healy scored a season-high 17 points for the Golden Eagle women's basketball team, but visiting Shippensburg used a 13-0 run late in the game to break open a one-point lead and get a 74-60 win over Clarion in PSAC women's basketball action Friday night at Tippin Gym.
Clarion (1-6 overall, 1-4 PSAC West) trailed by just a point, 56-55, following a
Hannah Heeter layup off a
Mackenzie Clark pass with 5:15 to play in the game. But that was the Golden Eagles last field goal until Healy, whose previous high this season was 15 points at Kutztown, scored with 1:11 left.
By that time, Shippensburg (5-3, 2-3 PSAC East) had gone ahead by 14 points, 69-55, thanks to seven points from Shawna Wert, who had 15 points, six rebounds and four assists.
Clarion, which trailed 34-31 at halftime, stayed close for most of the second half and tied the game at 49 on an old-school three-point play by Healy with 10:53 to play. But the Golden Eagles were never able to get over the hump, as a three-pointer by Dana Wert, who had a game-high 21 points, put Shippensburg ahead for good with 8:34 left.
The Golden Eagles trailed by as many as nine points a couple of times in the first half before using an 11-2 run near the end of the half to tie the game at 31 on a three by
Nicole Miloser with 11 seconds left. Miloser, a freshman, had all five or her points, the first five of her career, during the run.
Shippensburg, though, retook the lead just before the first-half horn when Erin Varley scored her only basket of the game on a three-pointer that put the Lady Raiders ahead 34-31 at the break.
Mackenzie Clark added a season-high 13 points, five rebounds and five assists off the bench for Clarion, while Heeter had a season-best 13 rebounds to go with six points.
Emma Fickel chipped in eight points with
Ann Deibert going for six points and six rebounds.
Caitlin Bamberger chipped in 13 points for Shippensburg with Monae Baker grabbing a game-high 14 rebounds to go with nine points.
Clarion returns to action at 2 p.m. Saturday when it hosts Cheyney.
NOTES – Shippensburg held a big advantage from the free-throw line going 25 of 29 compared to 8 of 9 for Clarion … Clarion shot 37.1 percent (23 of 62) from the field with Ship hitting on 36.4 percent (20 of 55) of its shots … Shippensburg was also 9 of 25 from three-point range with Clarion hitting on 6 of 19.
