CALIFORNIA – Despite a quick start, the Clarion University women's basketball team fell at California 84-51 Wednesday night.
Clarion (4-15 overall, 1- 6 PSAC-West) raced out to a 19-11 lead six minutes in, but California (15-4, 6-1) answered with a 29-7 run over the next 12 minutes to take a 46-30 halftime lead.
The Vulcans then started the second half with a 12-2 run and used a 16-1 run later in the half to pull away.
Freshman forward
Lauren Savulchak had career highs in points (19) and steals (6) for Clarion while going 8 of 13 from the floor and 3 of 5 from beyond the three-point arc.
Fellow freshman
Emma Fickel added 14 points and three rebounds and hit four more three-pointers giving her 65 on the season, four behind Rachel Steinbugl for third among freshmen in Clarion history.
Amy Johns led California with 23 points, six rebounds, four steals and three assists with Kayla Smith adding 21 points, 11 rebounds, four assists and three steals.
Clarion returns to action at 5:30 p.m. Saturday when it hosts Slippery Rock. The game will be a WBCA Pink Zone ® contest to raise awareness for cancer. The Golden Eagles, with help from the Clarion women's volleyball team, will be collecting money to be donated to The Cancer Center at Clarion Hospital.
