CAL THWARTS CLARION UPSET BID WITH LATE RUN

CLARION – California used a game-ending 23-5 run to thwart an upset bid by Clarion in PSAC-West women's basketball action Wednesday night at Clarion's Tippin Gym.
 
Clarion (7-18 overall, 4-9 PSAC-West) led 53-49 with 8:53 left but the Golden Eagles scored just one basket down the stretch, and Cal (19-6, 10-3) took advantage to get the win.
 
Emma Fickel and Lauren Savulchak led Clarion with 15 points each with Fickel hitting five more 3-pointers giving her 85 on the season moving her into sole possession of second place among Clarion freshmen in 3-pointers made. Savulchak, meanwhile, chopped in with six rebounds.
 
Also for Clarion, Ann Deibert had 13 points, five rebounds and three assists and Mackenzie Clark added four points, seven rebounds and five helpers.
 
Stephanie Michael led a foursome of Cal players in double digits with 16 points. Kayla Smith (10 points, 18 rebounds) and Amy Johnson (11 points, 13 rebounds) eiach recorded double-doubles for the Vulcans. Danielle Luckett added 11 points, and Kate Seebohm chipped in eight points and seven assists.
 
Clarion led 36-29 at halftime.
 
The Golden Eagles are back in action at 5:30 p.m. Saturday in their season finale at Gannon.
 
NOTES – Fickel entered the game as the top 3-point shooting freshmen in NCAA Division II making 3.3 per game, and she was also second in the nation regardless of division in made three's by a freshmen trailing only Penn State's  Maggie Lucas (3.5 per game).
