CLARION – The Clarion University women's basketball team used a 13-3 second-half run to beat Slippery Rock 52-45 in PSAC-West women's basketball action Saturday night at Clarion's Tippin Gym.
Clarion (5-15 overall, 2-6 PSAC-West) trailed 29-28 five minutes into the second half but quickly turned the game around with the run that was fueled by seven points from
Emma Fickel and four from
Mackenzie Clark. The run gave the Golden Eagles a 41-32 lead with 8:55 to play.
The lead grew to as many as 11 points before Slippery Rock (3-17, 1-7) scored the game's final four points.
Prior to Clarion's spurt the game had never been farther apart than six points, and that was an early 10-4 Clarion lead. After that, the contest remained between tied and three points in either direction until the midway point of the second half.
Fickel was one of three Clarion players in double digits with 14 points while adding six rebounds and four steals.
Danielle Smith led Slippery Rock with 13 points and 12 rebounds with Sherita Stanley adding 13 points.
Clarion returns to action at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday when it hosts Mercyhurst.
NOTES – The game was a WBCA Pink Zone ® contest with both teams wearing pink warm-ups in support of Breast Cancer Awareness. The Golden Eagles with help from the Clarion women's volleyball team collected money to donate to The Cancer Center at Clarion Hospital. Also, at halftime of the game, local cancer survivors were honored.
