CLARION – Carlie Cook blasted her fourth home run of the season and her 10th of her four-year career, but it wasn't enough to help Clarion get past IUP with the Crimson Hawks sweeping a doubleheader from the Golden Eagles at Clarion Tuesday.
IUP won Game One 13-4 and Game Two 4-2.
In Game One, Cook blasted a two-run shot in the fifth inning in the seventh inning to account for Clarion's first two runs, and two batters latter freshman Kalynn Barco hit her first career homer, also a two-run shot. The two home runs got Clarion back to within 5-4 but IUP scored five runs in the top of the sixth and three more in the seventh to break the game open.
Cook was 2-for-3 in Game One with the home run and two RBIs.
Megan Daley took the loss going seven innings and allowing 13 runs, eight earned, on 14 hits and three walks while striking out two.
In the second game, IUP built a 4-0 lead through 2 ½ innings before Clarion scored twice in the bottom of the third thanks to an RBI single by
Elizabeth Shiring and an IUP error.
Paige Alexander was 1-for-2 with a run scored for Clarion with Shiring going 1-for-2 with an RBI.
Erica Burkey took the loss going seven innings and allowing four earned runs on six hits and seven walks while striking out two.
Clarion is now 5-7 overall, 0-4 in the PSAC Central. The Golden Eagles are back in action Wednesday at Bloomsburg.
NOTES – Cook's four home runs tie her single-season high set two years ago … The 10 home runs tie Emily Sowers for the most by a Golden Eagle since 1999. Sowers played from 2000-03.
