CLARION DROPS CLOSE GAME TO VISITING BLOOMSBURG

Carlie Cook

Box Score

CLARION—Clarion softball dropped a nail biter 6-4 in Game One of a scheduled doubleheader against visiting Bloomsburg Monday afternoon in conference action.

Game Two was cancelled due to rain.

In the top of the first, Bloomsburg strung together two hits to get out to a quick lead, 1-0. The Golden Eagles came back in the bottom of the third to tie the game at one credited to a single by Elizabeth Shiring and a RBI triple from Kirsten Wilcox.

The Huskies responded with a five-hit, three-run top of the fourth inning to regain the lead 4-1.

The score remained there for another two innings until Clarion struck lightening. In the bottom of the sixth, the Golden Eagles started the inning by drawing two straight walks by Wilcox and Katie Baun before Nicole Lollo belted a single to load the bases. Carlie Cook's ground ball to third resulted in the Bloomsburg third baseman making a throwing error toward home where the ball found its way out of play allowing two runs to come home and making the score 4-3. The dead ball also put Cook on second base and Lollo on third still with no outs.

Two batters later, Kacie Nemeth popped the ball up along the first base line. However, it was just deep enough for Lollo to beat the throw home from the first basemen who caught the foul pop fly. The inning ended with the next batter, but not before Clarion had tied the game at 4-4.

However, it was in the top of the seventh that Clarion “dropped the ball.” Bloomsburg started the inning with a line drive single by D. Lazorka, followed by a ground ball out that advanced Lazorka to second base. With one out, a fly ball was dropped in right field by Shiring allowing Bloomsburg's base runners to advance to second and third.

The next batter hit a frozen rope to senior second basemen Baun that made a great diving grab to save the tie game for Clarion.  Without the error the inning could have been over after this catch. However, it was the next batter who lined a shot up the middle to score both of the runners on base to give
Bloomsburg the lead for good 6-4.

Shiring did all she could to make up for her error by belting a single in the bottom of the seventh, but that was the only hit Clarion could get in the final inning.

Erica Burkey was handed the loss for Clarion.

The Golden Eagles go on the road to Mansfield University to round out conference play this season on Thursday, April 21.
