GOUGH HELPS CLARION GET PAST MERCYHURST

ERIE – Amanda Gough had 26 set assists, 10 digs and three blocks, as the Clarion University women's volleyball team rebounded from its first PSAC West loss of the season Friday to defeat Mercyhurst 3-0 Saturday afternoon in Erie.
 
Gough ran a balanced offensive attack for the Golden Eagles (8-6 overall, 4-1 PSAC West) with Clarion featuring three players with six kills and one with five.
 
Hannah Heeter, Kaitlyn Anderson and Kellie Bartman each had six kills with Anderson adding five digs, two aces and a block and Heeter three blocks. Rebecca Webb chipped in with five kills and four blocks.
 
Rhianon Brady was once again the leader on defense with 21 digs.
 
The closest set of the match was the deciding one, as Clarion and Mercyhurst were tied at 23 before the Golden Eagles scored the final two points to take the set and the match on a Webb kill off a set by Gough.
 
In the other two sets, Clarion used big runs midway through the sets to take control of them.
 
The first set was tied at 13 before the Golden Eagles used an 8-3 run to take a 21-16 lead. Then, in the second set, Clarion led 14-13 before going on a 7-0 run to basically put the set away.
 
Clarion returns to action Tuesday at Slippery Rock.
