TAMPA, Fla. – The Clarion University women's volleyball team used a balanced effort to get its first win of the season, 3-0, over Tiffin Saturday at the Tampa Classic.
The Golden Eagles (1-3) finished the day 1-1 after dropping a 3-0 decision to host Tampa, the NCAA Division II runner-up a year ago.
In the win over Tiffin, Clarion got at least five kills from five different players led by 12 kills by
Kellie Bartman.
Rebecca Beightol had seven kills and Corrine Manley,
Kaitlyn Anderson and
Hannah Heeter each had five kills. Manley chipped in with two blocks.
Amanda Gough set up the offense with 21 set assists with
Rhianon Brady leading the defense with 11 digs.
The first set against the Dragons was close with Clarion picking up a 25-23 win but then the Golden Eagles cruised getting a 25-11 victory in the second set and a 25-18 win in the third set.
Against Tampa, Clarion battled hard in the first set before falling 25-19. The Spartans then took the next two sets by scores of 25-13 and 25-19.
Bartman and Beightol each had nine kills with Beightol adding six digs. Anderson added seven kills and Manley and Heeter five kills each. Heeter also had two blocks. Gough chipped in with 28 set assists, eight digs and three blocks with Brady getting 20 digs.
Clarion returns to action Friday at the WVIAC-PSAC Challenge at Gannon. The Golden Eagles face Alderson-Broaddus at 2 p.m. and Pitt-Johnstown at 6 p.m.
