(Pittsburgh, Pa.): Clarion's
Bekzod Aburakhmonov won a major decision, and
James Fleming and
Quintas McCorkle posted decisions, but #9 ranked Pitt had too much overall firepower and defeated the Golden Eagles 28-10 in an NCAA Division I wrestling match Friday night.
Held at Fitzgerald Field House, Clarion dropped to 1-5 overall and 0-2 in the Eastern Wrestling League, while Pitt raised its record to 11-1 overall and 4-0 in the EWL.
Clarion trailed 15-0 after four weight classes as the Panthers used their lower weight strengths to their advantage.
Pitt's #13 Anthony Zanetta won a 12-1 major over
Trey Hicks at 125, #17 Shelton Mack notched a 6-1 decision over
Joe Waltko at 133, Travis Shaffer won a technical fall at 6:58 over Tyler Bedeleyon at 141 and #10 rated Tyler Nauman won a tough 7-3 decision over
Cameron Moran at 149. Moran took Nauman down in the second and led 2-0, before Nauman escaped and then posted a 5-point move in the final 12 seconds of the second to take the lead for good at 6-2.
Clarion's #6 rated
James Fleming won a 92 decision over Donnie Tasser at 157, but not before Tasser gave the Eagle junior a tough match. Tasser scored a first period counter takedown for a 2-0 lead, while Fleming countered with a takedown in the second tie the bout at 2-2. After scoring a reversal to start the third, Fleming put the match away in style with a three point near fall, and then a two point near fall in the final ten seconds. Fleming boosted his season record to 17-2.
Abdurakhmonov, who moved up to #5 in both the AWN and Intermat rankings this week at 167, notched an impressive 13-3 major decision over Tyler Wilps. Bekzod had one takedown in the first period and two in the second for a 6-3 lead. After escaping in the third he took Wilps down to his back for a 5-point move and an eventual 13-3 victory. The Clarion senior is 21-4 this season.
Pitt put the match away with three straight wins from 174 – 197. Patrick Tasser decisioned
Nick Milano 7-1 at 174, Andy Vaughn pinned
Steven Cressley at 4:36 at 184 and #3 rated Matt Wilps major decisioned
Alex Thomas at 197 by an 11-2 final.
Clarion closed out the meet with heavyweight
Quintas McCorkle getting an 8-2 win over Joel Yahner of nearby Brockway. McCorkle had three takedowns to post his 18
th win against only 9 losses.
