EAGLE WRESTLERS EDGED 23-20 AT WVU

            (Morgantown, W.V.): Clarion received pins from James Fleming and Alex Thomas, but with the team score tied going to the last bout, West Virginia rallied for a win at heavyweight to defeat the Golden Eagles 23-20 on Sunday afternoon in NCAA Division I Wrestling.
 
            Held at The Coliseum in Morgantown, W.V., Clarion dropped to 1-6 in dual meets and 0-3 in the Eastern Wrestling League, while WVU pushed its record to 4-3 overall and 1-1 in the EWL.
 
            Clarion trailed 11-0 after the first three weight classes, but rallied back to take a 14-11 lead in this seesaw matchup.
 
            Clarion senior Cameron Moran started the comeback with a 14-5 major decision over Brutus Scheffel at 149-pounds. Moran used four takedowns and a three point near fall for his win.
 
            Fleming, ranked #6 in the latest AWN and Intermat polls, was ahead 12-0 at the time of his fall in the second period. Fleming hooked up a cradle and registered the fall at 4:27 cutting WVU's lead to 11-10. Fleming upped his season record to 18-2.
 
            Abdurakhmonov, ranked #5 in the nation at 165, put Clarion in the lead 14-11 with his 9-0 major decision over Kyle Eason. The Clarion senior had a big second period with a reversal, two point near fall and two stalling points for the win. Bekzod now has a season record of 22-4.
 
            WVU came back to lead 20-14 when #19 ranked Lance  Bryson edged Nick Milano 3-2 (takedown with 20 seconds to win) at 174, and #20 ranked Matt Ryan pinned Steve Cressley at 2:40 at 184.
 
            Clarion's Alex Thomas tied the match at 20-20 when he pinned Nick Hylton at 26-seconds of the match. Thomas had a takedown in the opening seconds, and his half-nelson turned into a quick fall for the Eagles.
 
            The match came down to heavyweight, where #18 Brandon Williamson edged Quintas McCorkle 3-1 to give the Mountaineers the team win. Williamson was able to turn McCorkle in the second period for a two point near fall, that provided the winning points.
 
            CLARION NOTES: The Golden Eagles are now off for two weeks until Clarion travels to Bloomsburg on Friday Feb. 4 and then to Ohio U on Feb. 5 …
