Aleya Miller, the Clarion University women's basketball team upset visiting California 72-69 in overtime Wednesday night at Tippin Gym.
“It's a signature win for us,” Clarion head coach Gie Parsons said. “We have known that we are a quality team. Tonight proved it, and hopefully, the momentum will carry on.”
Heeter recorded her fifth straight double-double – the first Golden Eagle to do that in eight years – and had the first 20-20 game at Clarion in nearly eight years while recording the second most rebounds in school history.
“Hannah was a like a vacuum cleaner out there,” Parsons said. “It was a great performance. No single player wins a game, but, wow, what a night.”
Jones and Miller were also instrumental in the victory, which improved Clarion to 5-12 overall and 4-9 in the PSAC West.
With Clarion trailing by three, 59-56, and the clock reading one second, Jones hit a three-pointer from the upper left side to send the game to overtime.
Then in overtime, after Cal (11-6, 8-5) had gone on an 8-2 run to erase a 67-61 Clarion lead, Miller nailed a jumper in the paint off a Heeter pass with 38.6 seconds left to put the Golden
Eagles up 71-69. She then hit a free throw with 15.9 left to put Clarion up three, and Cal's Danielle Luckett missed a three-pointer at the horn.
Miller had a career-high 16 points while adding eight rebounds. Jones chipped in with nine points, six assists and two steals with
Courtney Healy also grabbing nine rebounds to go with five points, four assists and four steals.
Luckett paced California with 22 points, seven rebounds, four steals and three assists. Amy Johns added 15 points and six rebounds on 6 of 19 shooting with Emma Mahady adding nine rebounds off the bench.
Clarion trailed by seven, 51-44, with 6:56 to play before going on a 8-0 run thanks to three points each from Jones and Healy and two by
Amanda Gough to take a 52-51 lead with 4:29 to play, Clarion's first lead since 2-0.
But Cal answered with five straight points to take a 56-52 lead on a free throw by Nakia DeBlanc with 3:01 left.
A pair of Heeter layups got Clarion back within one, 57-56, with 1:01 to play before Johns hit two free throws with 43 seconds left to put the Vulcans up 59-56. But Kate Seebohm missed a pair of free throws with 10 seconds left setting up Jones' game-tying shot.
In the extra session, Clarion used an 8-0 run spurred by scoring by four different players to take the 67-61 lead with 1:54 left. But Cal quickly tied the game thanks to six points from Luckett.
Clarion is back in action at 1 p.m. Saturday when it travels to Edinboro.
NOTES – Heeter's 25 rebounds are tied for the second most at Clarion with the 25 Mona Gaffney had on Dec. 3, 1993 … Cheryl Bansek has the school record with 26 on Jan 22, 1986 … Heeter now has four games of 15 or more rebounds including three in a row. She is the sixth player at Clarion to have four contests of 15 or more rebounds in a career and the sixth to have four or more in a one season while being the first freshman to accomplish that feat … Heeter's five straight double-doubles are the most in a row by a Golden Eagle since Heather Cigich had nine in a row in 2004. Cigich was also the last 20-20 player for Clarion accomplishing the feat with 21 points and 21 rebounds Feb. 14, 2004 … Heeter now has 164 rebounds on the season, the 12
th most ever by a Clarion freshman … It was Clarion's first overtime contest since the first game of last season, a span of 41 games. The Golden Eagles have now won four straight overtime contests dating back to the 2008 season. Cal was the last team to beat Clarion in overtime doing so Feb. 18, 2006, 64-59, at Clarion. The Golden Eagles are 7-5 in overtime games since the start of the 1999-2000 campaign.
