Box Score CLARION – Trevon Johnson's 15-foot jumper with three seconds to play lifted visiting Bloomsburg past Clarion 87-85 in PSAC men's basketball action Saturday night at Tippin Gym.
Clarion (10-4 overall, 6-2 PSAC West), which saw its nine-game win streak come to an end, rallied from four down with just over 30 seconds to play to tie the game at 85 when
Calvin Edwards came up with a steal and fed freshman
Winfield Willis for a layup with 21 seconds left.
After a Bloomsburg timeout, the Huskies (10-3, 6-2 PSAC East) played for the last shot and got it when Johnson, who was one of five Bloomsburg players in double digits with 13 points, buried the jumper.
Clarion had one final chance, but an off-balance shot from a couple of feet back of the three-point line by Willis, who finished with a season-high 31 points, was short. Willis had to duck under a Bloomsburg defender to get the shot off.
It was two Willis free throws with 32 seconds left that had brought Clarion back to two, 85-83, after Bloomsburg had taken an 85-81 lead on a Johnson jumper with 43 seconds left.
The Johnson jumper at the 43-second mark ended a 10-2 run for Bloomsburg, which trailed by seven, 74-67, with 7:01 to play and by four, 79-75, with 3:57 left.
Clarion led by as many as 17, 28-11, midway through the first half before Bloomsburg closed the gap to two, 41-39, at halftime thanks to a half-ending 16-5 run. Willis scored 17 first-half points on 6 of 7 shooting including a pair of threes.
Paul McQueen added 23 points and eight rebounds for Clarion, while
Mike Kromka had a double-double with 16 points and a career-high 14 rebounds.
Dontahe Jordan paced Bloomsburg with 23 points and six rebounds. Nnamdi Njoku added 18 points, Lorenzo Christmas 16 and Larry Webster 10 points, three blocks and three steals for the Huskies.
The teams combined to shoot 56.9 percent (66 of 116) for the game with Bloomsburg hitting 60 percent of its shots (36 of 60) and Clarion 53.6 percent of its (30 of 56). The Huskies were particularly accurate in the second half nailing 20 of 30 (66.7 percent) while Clarion was on fire in the first half shooting 15 of 26 (57.7 percent).
Clarion returns to action at 7:30 p.m. when it hosts Mercyhurst.
