CLARION DEFEATS EDINBORO 3-1

Box Score CLARION, Pa – Behind 21 Rebecca Ferragonio digs, the Clarion University women's volleyball team defeated Edinboro 3-1 Saturday afternoon at Tippin Gymnasium.

Clarion won the first two sets 25-12 and 25-23 before Edinboro came from behind to win the third set 27-25.  The Golden Eagles closed out the fourth set 25-22 to clinch the victory.

Carlie Bieranowski led clarion with 13 kills and three digs.  Rebecca Webb added 10 kills (.37 hitting percentage) and five blocks, while Emily Stewart chipped in with nine kills and eight digs.  Hannah Heeter finished with seven kills and four blocks, while Laura Subject set up the offense nicely with 35 set assists and 11 digs.

Clarion took control early in the first set leading 13-3 before closing out the set 25-12.

In the second set, Edinboro (8-18 overall, 5-8 PSAC West) fought back but came up a bit short.  Clarion won the set 25-22.

“We didn't play a good second set,” said Clarion Head coach Jennifer Mills.  “Edinboro stayed aggressive and fought back hard in the set but we were fortunate to win the set.”

In the third set, Clarion led 24-18 before Edinboro used a 9-1 run to close out the set 27-25.

“I told the girls after the match that we need to stay consistent and clean up our play,” said Mills.  “We need to improve our play from this weekend.”

Clarion was trailing 16-12 in the fourth set before using a nice run to tie the match.  The Golden Eagles were able to close out the fourth set 25-22.

“Once we get into our system, we play the way we are capable of,” said Mills.  “We need to get back into the gym this week and improve on some things.  We have two important PSAC matches coming up this week on the road.”

With the win, the Golden Eagles improve to 21-5 overall and 11-2 in the PSAC West standings.  They are currently tied with Gannon and California for first place.
 
Clarion has now won 5 of their last 6 matches against Edinboro.

The Golden Eagles return to action at 7 p.m. Tuesday evening when they will travel to Slippery Rock.


Notes:

With a 21-5 start to the season, that is tied for the 3rd best start in school history.

Rebecca Webb is 13 kills shy of becoming the 15th player at Clarion with 900 in a career.

Laura Subject needs six set assists to become the 9th different player in school history with 900 set assists in a season.
